These are the two most quintessential jazzy prog thrash/death metal bands around, both of which have reunited recently. These two bands are widely appreciated in the technical death metal scene, and their albums from the early 90's are on the rise to legendary status. For me, it's Atheist easily, but there are plenty of Cynic fans around here as well.

Cynic definitely.
I liked their techdeth stuff, as with Atheists, but their newest album is a much better change of pace.

Cynic all the way! They play steinbergers. I mean, come on!
Even though I live in the town where Atheist is from... haha

I might regret this later but I'll go with Atheist cause I've never heard anything by Cynic

Cynic because of Traced in Air and an awesome live performance. It's hard to vote against the band that made Elements, though.

Atheist is far better, they are a very inovative band, and Cynic's musical style irritates me

Cynic is definitely on a higher level than Atheist. Traced in Air is beauty. One of the best metal albums ever made.
Atheist is a good band and I enjoy their stuff. But easy choice for me.

Atheist.
All 3 of their albums are brilliant, and each was a little better. I liked "Focus" but not really "Traced in Air" from cynic |

Cynic. I was listening to Atheist just two days ago and I realized it sounded a bit dated these days. Some bands are better remembered than rediscovered...

I have never listened to Cynic. So my vote goes to Atheist.
I haven't really listened to Elements yet, but Unquestionable Presence is the best metal album i have ever listened to.
BTW does anyone know what time that wacky riff at the beginning of Mother Man is in?

They are both excellent bands, but the reverse is also true. Many votes for Cynic with comments about not ever listening to Atheist. Me - just excited for some new Atheist after 17 years!!!!!
