How come this MONSTER is not on PA?
One of the most progressive sax players around. His work with the M-Base collective revolves around polyrythmics, improvisation and feel. He doesn't really play "jazz", as bass and drums are completely different from any jazz style. The album "Anatomy of a Groove" is to me more than enough to qualify this guy as "progressive". Coming from the Chicago jazz scene, he is still active today with a big variety of styles covered from funky to hip-hop, to what I qualify as "mathjazz"... But shouldn't Anatomy of a Groove be evaluated separately as an M-Base Collective album? At rateyourmusic it's not listed under his disocgraphy (mind you, we have added projects/artists together before for one page in the discography)
Love that first clip, I've heard it before (and it does have significant similarities to some of my favourite Fusion music). It's not enough for his music to be progressive (I love progressive jazz and lot of progressive music), the question would be, how much of his "solo" work (album released under his name) would be considerable as Jazz-Rock Fusion? I'm not that familiar with his music, though I know some great jazz-funk and Bebop music from him. Edited by Logan - August 20 2010 at 15:50 |

About the M-base collective, Steve Coleman has two different jazz-oriented formations (the Five Elements being the other). He leads and writes for these groups. If you go, to the m-base collective website bio, you will find.... a steve coleman bio. The name doesn't really matter in the end.
About the music, I am aware that he's not "knee deep" into prog, but it sounds progressive to me. He worked in a variety of different projects (the metrics, the mystic rythm society...) that all go in different directions. His work with the FIve Elements is under his name, and has some great material too! Cheers |

The YouTube samples you linked to do sound like Fusion indeed, so consider this suggestion posted for the JRF team.
