Just wanted to share this little video of perhaps the best guitar player alive...

The idiot nodding his head in awe in the lower left corner is me.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

He was amazing regardless.

Certainly an excellent player, but have heard this before. Steve Vai, Alan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson have all done similar sounding material and gone beyond. The 3 Steves-Morse, Howe and Hackett are more talented and interesting to listen to as are a lot of other players.

Doesn't take away from his ability, but he is not the best player alive.

yep, Poland (the country) is amazing Wink

Don't really care for who is the best living guitarist in the world, as far as they don't fall in commercialism.

This video is completely improvised, every bit made up on the spot. I've been at a similar clinic with Steve Vai, and I honestly couldn't say which one is better. once you get to that level it becomes more a matter of each player's niche.

That's great, improvisation is great, but any of the players I mentioned could improvise mind-blowing stuff on the spot too.

Of all the players ever, no one can pull more breadth of expressive sound out of the guitar than Chris. That I can say pretty confidently. Beck is obviously the prototype in that regard but Chris IMO went beyond that. I also think Chris' playing is much more expressive than Holdsworth. Holdsworth is just too clinical for me.

For JJ, Chris and Gar Samuelson were in a fusion band (they loved Weather Report and Mahavishnu) and starving in LA. Both finally got jobs with BC Rich, Chris was sanding necks and Gar was more in promotions. That's how Gar got the Megadeth gig and he pulled in Chris. Both had terrible smack habits, introduced Dave to the stuff, and eventually got kicked out. Chris cleaned up (I think twice) and starting about 2000 has been doing fusion again. He's in a trio called Ohm: whose first album is phenomenal.

The smack aged Chris pretty badly but his playing from about 1999-2005 was probably his best. He's still phenomenal, though I think he's settling into a groove and not as adventurous as he was when he first got back into jazz fusion.

I've jammed with both of them. Vai does indeed improvise mind-blowing stuff too, but it's not better than Chris'. They're different players and each brings different things to the table.

If you're not into Chris, that's fine, but he really is up there with the guys you talk about. I've been into this scene for 25 years, I've seen most of the big guys live, I've heard pretty much everybody.

In a completely different style, Tommy Emmanuel has to be up there for best guitarist alive.

Very good guitarist but not my kind of thing, too much about individual playing rather than the whole composition.

Again this is just an improv at a clinic. He's a jazz guy so soloing is a big part of the game, but here's an example of a composed piece he did.

I'll quit responding, I enjoy the guy. Dig or dig not.

I have the first Ohm: album, he certainly is among the best I've heard.  Always hesitate to call someone #1, it really comes down to taste when you're talking about the cream of the crop methinks.

Curious why this got moved given that Poland's solo albums are in Prog Metal and his group Ohm: is in Jazz fusion.

Nice piece, no question he is an excellent player, but for me, his style and sound has been done before.
And as mentioned, there really is no #1 at his level as it does come down to individual taste.

(seeing as how nobody answered you) Yes, this is the same Chris Poland.  He was a jazz guitarist before and after being in Megadeth

It is felt that Chris Poland is expressed by "Ohm" as good individuality. This Trio has a good technology.

However, if performance of Chris Poland and Thrash Metal like Megadeth are favorite listeners, "Damn The Machine" might be accepted.
