Portnoy was intreasingly goining in that direction. I mean, come on, using Slipknot as influence for Dream Theater albums? SERIOULY man!

I don't think it is about cash. Maybe it is just that the guys at A7x can massue his ego some way the guys at DT can't. They are young and he is one of their idols, so they just STFU and listen what he has to say and DO exactly what he says (probably).

Walter, just so you don't feel bad (like that would ever happen), I appreciate your humour at a time like this.

Hopefully they get someone with a tolerable snare tone this time 'round.  Although that still won't likely make me start listening to DT again

You've obviously never heard of 1989.

You mean when great new genres like grunge came to exist? Big smile

wow as a big dream theater fan, i can't say that i'm sorry about this break up. of course this is a strange feeling that thinking dream theater without portnoy, but not a sad one Smile

if dream theater decides to go on, i hope they will agree with a drummer who has jazzy influences in his drumming. i don't know, like nick d'virgilio style drummers. this may be the kind of addition to the band that will possibly take dream theater back to the 'progressive rock' years.

Well, um...

I like Mike because he's a talented drummer, and I do actually like his singing.

I like Dream Theater because they are an amazing progressive metal band.

And I'm not too concerned about his leaving because if what he says is true, then he shouldn't be in Dream Theater anymore anyway.  Why should a guy stay in something he doesn't want to stay in?  Just to make you and other people happy?  He's a grown man.  Let him do what he wants.

I hear Bill Bruford's available....Wink

In all seriousness, though, I'm intrigued to see where both parties go after this. I'm optimistic that DT will return to an "older" sound, and I'm curious to see where Mike's gut leads him musically. However, what happens to my beloved Prog Nation?

Shocking news, no doubt. But I must agree with those who've said this could be a really good thing for the band as a whole. Portnoy said he put his whole self into DT 24/7/365, but with all the side projects he does and has done over the last decade or more, I don't think he has. And just to know there will never be another DT album will Portnoy's growling on it is a welcome relief.

WAAAHH!!!!

Sorry.  I couldn't help myself.  Ah well.

So now what?  A new drummer for DT?  I can hardly imagine who could replace Mike.  But let's just wait and see.

I'm not really a big Dream Theater fan but....woah. This is pretty big news in the prog world. I didn't really care for what DT produced after Train of Thought (listened to their new album, didn't like it at all), though. I do wish to see what Mike does now. I hope he'll continue to do progressive projects, and hopefully in the future he'll distance himself from the absolutely terrible Avenged Sevenfold. I'm not as interested in what DT will do, however.

Would you like some Bailey's?
