one have millions of chops, the other one could wrap up one tight groove after another
one is more is less, the other less is more, 
they are on the oppesite possiton from eachother on the drum parameter, one goes for the show, flash and the extra drum sole, the other rearly (or never) did a drum solo, become the ultimate backbone to any band or artist he played for.
and as for this being a prog site I predict a onesided poll, but I think they are compareable in the drum-universe.

Palmer was a force of nature at his best (1970-74). Take A Pebble shows that he wasn't just all technial wizardry.
Porcaro I know a lot less about but he's a legend just for his drumming on Africa alone as far as I'm concerned. Beautifull stuff.
One is ying and one is yang as you say.
Interestingly Simon Phillips might be the bridge between the two. He auditioned for the ELP drumstool in the eighties (losing out to Cozy Powell but he had the chops to do it) and eventually took the drumstool in Toto.

Groove that Jeff Porcaro had was overwhelming. As for his performance, other drum players cannot also mimic it.
Jeff Porcaro had performed the rhythm in the performance in the old times. It is said that the tempo of the rhythm was indeed done accurately as On-Beat. However, it is said that Jeff Porcaro made the note of Bass Drum "laid-back" by intention.
However, Steve Lukather was unified to the performance of Bass Drum with the laid-back. Jeff Porcaro that listened to it was angry to Steve Lukather.
｢Also to Bass Drum. If it is done, Groove that I made by intention loses all the meanings. ｣
However, Steve Lukather was said that Groove of Jeff Porcaro was perfect. It is made remarks that the metronome was unnecessary.
Anyway, the performance of Jeff Porcaro was perfect. And, a lot of performances are done. However, he might hardly gone in drum solo. Jeff Porcaro was said that there was no confidence to make solo of a good composition for Drum Solo.
"We' re Waiting "collected to "Down Two Then Left" of Boz Scaggs as a sound source that I can personally listen to the glimpse can be enumerated though it is not complete solo. Ending of this tune will have a wonderful composition.

Ying and yang indeed! An expressive, if sometimes indulgent, showman versus a technician. Out of sympathy, I vote for the technician because in general they often have as much skill as the showmen, if not more, and don't get the credit they deserve. Somebody who sessioned for Steely Dan must be freaking awesome. Porcaro.

^ it is becouse it is in 5/4 time sig (which Nick Mason had problem with) which then futher made Roger Waters have second thoughts regrding Masons possition in the band, that they had to ask a session drummer to fill in becouse of Nicks troubled relationship with that song.

Yeah, Waters said they brought in Porcaro 'cause Mason's brain just didn't work that way....couldn't pick up on odd timings. That was at a time when Gilmour claims Waters prevented the rest of the band from writing. Two camps formed and Mason remained on the fence....until they brought in a sessioneer. Waters said Mason joined the Gilmour/Wright camp 'cause he knew "where his bread was buttered." Maybe if Waters displayed a bit more tact.....
Porcaro made Toto listenable, IMO. Even the sappy stuff. Palmer was perfect for ELP....bombastic drummer that pounded loud enough to be heard in the back of the arena.

Now that I didn't know.  Very interesting as I think Simon Phillips would have probably made the material recorded for the ELPowell album sound a tad erm... proggier (it ain't a bad album but with Cozy being very much an 'in the pocket' player plus the AOR radio production employed, both conspired to diminish the record for me.
