Orbs are a 5-piece band, a sort of "supergroup" made up of:
Dan Briggs (Between the Buried and Me), Adam Fisher and Clayton Holyoak (Fear Before the March of Flames) and Ashley Ellyllon (who used to be in Abigail Williams and is now in Cradle of Filth) and Chuck Johnson. They have recently released their debut album, Asleep Next to Science (being in the science field myself, this is an even more interesting album for me). The vocals remind me of Mars Volta's.

Their Myspace bio:
After three years of cross-country collaborations, ORBS have united to release their debut full-length album, Asleep Next to Science, which will be available August 17th on Equal Vision Records.

ORBS blends progressive and experimental sounds through the creative workings of Adam Fisher and Clayton "Goose" Holyoak (Fear Before), Dan Briggs (Between the Buried and Me), Ashley Ellyllon (Abigail Williams/Cradle of Filth) and Chuck Johnson (Torch Runner).

Recorded at The Basement recording studio in Winston-Salem, N.C. with producer and engineer Jamie King [Between the Buried and Me, Alesana], the nine song, 66-minute album is the product of long-distance friendships linked through an appreciation for music, nature, and a mutual desire to defy common song structure.

By juxtaposing high energy, piano-infused choruses with a mixture of classic and space-rock interludes, the quintet breaks the mold of traditional songwriting and creates a sound all their own. Lyrically, the album transports the listener through a vivid, almost conversational, storytelling experience. Asleep Next to Science connects mind with matter as the lyrics and music unite space and sound to create a sound that simply put, is otherworldly.

I will post this in Heavyprog to get opinions, right now they strike me as a possibility for Crossover as well

Cheers mate

Let me know if you need more "elaborate" samples from them, on top of youtube and myspace.

This seems as though it may still be in limbo? Appears that they were kind of sort of rejected for Heavy Prog.  I didn't see a discussion in the crossover thread and they aren't listed on PA, but discussion in Heavy Prog thread suggests that crossover rejected them.  Last comment regarding them suggested possibility for Prog Metal.  I can't tell if they were evaluated by the PM team or not.

When I went through the entire Heavy thread looking for lost suggestions I believe I considered these guys rejected. I'll take a look at their material and see where they might fit.

I reckon this should be in the database somewhere for sure.
Let's have a listen to the album then, (for the benefit of the casual visitor here)...I've only got YouTube samples, I'm afraid, but at least they're in order... Smile

I'm not even going to attempt to suggest a sub genre...

I remember these guys, neat band, and I'm rather sure they were rejected for HeavyProg (but with the new team, they could be re-evaled)

I was going to suggest this band last year, but decided that everyone hates everything and I shouldn't waste my time.

This is one of those bands that should be here.
There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

As a hardcore based band, I can only see them in heavy prog if approved. Any other path would be unrealistic IMO.

Hello?  How is this band not here yet?  They popped into my head a bit ago (not sure why) and I was surprised not to find them here.  If not for Heavy Prog, then for one of the Metal subs.

I've had their (one and only) album for maybe a year or so.  Took a bit to get into it (the vocals, especially), but I'm listening to it right now and it's pretty fabulous!  Any fan of Between the Buried and Me (which share one member) should like it.  Maybe Mars Volta as well (similar vocals; also similar to Coheed and Cambria).

So what's the what?

They were added to progfreak by avestin three years ago, but there is no PA information on the site for them. If Heavy DID evaluate and reject them back then it must have been during a period when the team weren't using progfreak. There were other bands added to progfreak by avestin at around the same time, which were also suggested in this forum and never made any progress (and don't seem to have been definitely rejected either). 'Today Is The Day' is another one which immediately springs to mind: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=79723.

This needs Andy's input to clear it up...

Heh, I even have this album, listened to it a few times, and never made a decision. I'll take another look tonight.
