I just got this link from DT's official site. I'm having the feeling most people on the forum won't agree.

On the poll they made, John Myung won for best bassist of all time.

Wow. Yet another thread that's basically an invitation for DT bashing.

DT IS an open-invitation for bashing. In fact..  the long OOP Micky's Guide to Progressive Rock had this for the entry for DT.

DT (aka Dream Theater.. aka Dream Theatre...aka 5 musicians in search of a song) - an American group whose name is synominous for bringing out either.. extreme manifastations of latent male homosexual in the guise of fanboyism.. or ...  extreme bashing by fans of music not just instrumental skill.

They're one of the most loved and most popular progressive bands of all time. People simply like being f**king a****les about the fact that they don't like them.

they are one of the most loved... and despised progressive bands of all time.  Similar to ELP.. but not as loved.. nor as despised.

it all goes back to the first page of (insert shameless plugging for royalities on the ebay market) MIcky's OOP Guide to Progressive Rock

Prog Fans (aka proggies, aka geeks, freaks, instrumental w**ker wannabes, etc etc, etc) -  Fans of progressive rock notorious for a complete lack of sense of humor, inability to critique music objectively, and general superiority to all fans of 'lesser' genres of music.  (see PA's)

Plus Anthony, even you have to agree that him being voted "best of all time" is, quite simply put, outrageous.

Could people just say something about John Myung please, since this thread is about him. Even if it is "I don't like his playing" or "It's a joke he was voted best bass player".

I myself do like the way he plays in DT very much, but I wouldn't dare say he is the best bass player at all. Still, I believe he is a very good one.

I'm sure he is good, but everyone knows the best bass player of all time is Bootzilla.

or simply the stupidest thing i've read in the last ..day or so.  Another thing that gets my goat...  always has...

the complete lack of differentiation between best.. and greatest.  They are NOT the same.  Argue all one wants about best...  that is the stuff of folly.. now greatest.  You need to actually KNOW something to argue that.

OK then, Bootzilla is the 'greatest' bass player of all time, fair enough.        ... Myung is OK, I have no problem with him.

LOL  I agree about not having a problem with Myung's playing - he's technically competent enough.  I can't say I agree on Bootzilla being the 'greatest' either though - I'd personally suggest Mingus for that, or if we're sticking with electric I'd say Jamerson or Pastorius.

well... we could create a seperate category so we can Myung some love.  As a bassist.. he can't hold the jock of Jamerson, the Ox, Jack Bruce, Squire.

however.. the man is not without talent.  Instead of greatest bassists.. how about greatest guitar players who play bass guitars.  Sorry.. maybe I'm old school.. but that stuff is not bass playing... it is playing guitar.. with a bass.  Though sorry... Myung still loses out to Billy Sheehan in that category LOL

Bootsy Collins with James Brown in the early 70s = best/greatest electric bass playing ever.

I don't understand why we're even talking about this. This is an online poll that has clearly been rigged by fanboys. Myung (42%) beat the next closest entry, Geddy Lee (11%), by 7,700 votes. That's far more than the other 23 entries combined. Last month Joey Jordison won best drummer over Portnoy by 10%. Before that, none of the polls come even close to having a total of 10,700 because absolutely nobody cares about this website, they just cared enough to give that many votes to Myung with a bot or something because they have nothing else to do.
