A post to another thread made me think to create this blog.

On PA there is so much music of so many bands, which I never heard of before, that I definitely need ages to discover them all. Nevertheless, I give it a try.
What I do is the following:
I go to the Symphonic Prog page of PA, then I click on the stream button.
I have just finished the letter D. So far I found interesting:

- Arachnoid (which has a touch of King Crimson)
- Atmosphera (which sounds like Yes)
Both bands released only one album, if I see it correctly. And both bands have, IMHO, something more specific in them, than only trying to be some kind of a tribute band. I already tried to hear more of it from other sources and I really like it!

Then I noted on my list for further discovery:

- Beggars Opera
- Cathedral
- Chaos Code
- Cinema
- Clearlight
- Coda
- Discipline

I would like to continue to post, after I finished more letters.
What do you think? I appreciate your thoughts on it.

Sounds like a good plan. Wish I had the patience.

Yeah, good plan. Honestly I rarely use the streaming, I guess with prog I don't feel so much like listening to single assorted tracks, I like to listen to the complete album so I mostly look for albums which look promising and get them.

I should try PA's streaming more though...

I've discovered some good bands through streaming on PA. Favorite so far would probably be Simon Steensland.

Just started with the letter E:

- Earth and Fire
Very interesting. Just discovered that they are from the Netherlands. Like the band Coda. And like Ekseption, the only prog band I knew so far from that country, and who specialised in rock adaptions of classical music. Seems to be quite a scene there in the Netherlands.

- Echolyn
I remember seeing the name mentioned already several times in the forum. Sounds interesting indeed. I'll look into it further.
The music plays and plays, and I am cleaning my desk, then the whole room, then I look at the monitor and see that the song still is not over. Only then I look at the duration - 50 minutes! I am shocked! I think I'll take a little bit longer for E.

I've found the vast majority of my music here on this site.   For all those delicious obscurities from 67-78 that make up my daily diet of prog...thank you, PA.

My ultimate goal is to explore every artist on the site,  It might take me 50-odd years, but hey, I'll never be bored.  Wink

I've just been through the letter E. The only artist I knew was ELP.

- Echolyn is so far the most interesting discovery in E. Their music seems to incorporate many influences from the 70's prog rock era, especially Gentle Giant, but I also hear some ELP, Supertramp and Styx. At the same time the music is far from derivative, the influences are all mixed to form something really fresh and new. I definitely want to listen more of it. Unfortunately the albums are not easy to get and/or expensive.

- Eidolon
I like these mysterious mellotron sounds mixed with violin.

- England
A hidden gem of the 70's.

- Epignosis
Oh, I did not know that Epignosis is a musician Embarrassed. A nice 20 minute epic.

All of the above I'll explore further.

If you come across any whole albums being streamed send a PM - there were heaps at one stage and you could review them without forking out massive amounts of cash. Now there are only one or two songs scattered usually. i heard all Visual Cliff albums here and Shadow Circus but they took them down I believe.

@ ACR: I haven't found whole albums yet. But the live version of Echolyn's Mei is there (50 min.). Still it is not the whole album. And thanks for the recommendation. After first listen of 'Semi-permeable...' it did not really appeal to me, but I'll give it a second try later.

I have been through the letter F, and I think the highlights are here Flower Kings and Focus.

- The Flower Kings are not a new discovery for me, I knew them already earlier before I joined PA. I believe that this amazing Swedish band played a big part in reviving prog rock in the 90ies.

- Focus: this is a new discovery for me. I saw the band often mentioned in the forum and I understand now why. Because of the yodeling in Hocus Pocus I first thought they come from Bavaria, but no, it is a Dutch band! I'll look into it further.

Creating a random playlist (just above the list of recently added MP3's on the homepage) might reveal some interesting music now and then. Just give it a try.

I hoped, that someone would comment on artists I left out Thumbs Up , because I might overlook someone.
Fruupp's song It's all up now is streamed here, which indeed has a remarkable song structure. But it did not really grip me. Is there another song you might recommend me to listen to?

So are you buying any albums based on your listens?

Arachnoid's album delivers all the way through, if you like their sound, it's worth getting.
Discipline's Unfolded like Staircase is very good, but the lead track (Limbo) is far superior to the rest of the album
Echolyn is a very good modern prog. The live Mei is a little flat to my ears, but their own site used to have other free songs to try.
Focus only uses the yodels on that one song, with rare hints at it elsewhere. They are very solid classic prog band that I'd put up with Camel in the "Second Tier" of classic prog.

I've gotten alot of music based on streaming samples, here, and last.fm when they used to have full songs. Lots of bands have some free material to get you started as well.

Enjoy the site.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.
