I tried to collect everything Frank has done but stopped at his early 80's output. I think after then decent stuf is furter and farther between.

If you had to even ask this question, you  will never understand...

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I received "Dance Me This" in the mail this morning.  I've already listened to it 3 times.

It's beautiful.

The first track contains what is probably his last guitar performance.  It gives me chills.

All the tracks are Synclavier pieces, mostly using a technique FZ and his Synclavier assistant Todd Yvega called "phasing" - taking short loops of different lengths, and playing them until they all join back together.  It's eerie and beautiful.

The vocals (on only a few tracks) are from 3 Tuvan throat singers, invited to the UMRK by master Frank.

As it is the last album he created before his untimely demise, this makes a compelling exclamation point on his career.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

A little correction: the phasing is only apparent to me in a few of the tracks.  The "Wolf Hollow" tracks are obviously inspired by Zappa's well known admiration of Edgard Varese, and are beautiful and mesmerizing.

I think you will like it.
Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

That's a better image of the cover.
I updated the one on the album page to use it.

I'll surely come off as an outsider here, but Zappa is best represented by Apostrophe and Studio Tan. I've encountered sheer hatred for the latter by more than one Zappa fan, while the former has been generally touted as the commercial breakthrough the artist needed to help sustain all else. I'd like to see a Prog Archive Top Ten thread of Mr. Zappa's work (I sense it may have already been done).

I did see that "Dance Me This" was due out this month, but I haven't seen it anywhere in the shops.
But I'm interested!

I thought CPIII was the last album as it was worked on til the end. DMT was finished in 1993, no?

I haven't ordered it yet, (waiting for more funds so I can order a bunch of FZ albums from zappa.com to save on shipping) but I have, er.. acquired it, will hopefully give it a listen soon.

According to the liner notes, this was finished last.  Much of it may have been recorded earlier, but it explicitly notes that the guitar solo is thought to be the very last time he played.
Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

First listen and a very good impression. The first two tracks are short but excellent. Then the serious stuff begins with Wolf Harbor and its six dark parts where the percussion is the most melodic instrument. Varese forever Hug ! The four last tracks are between 2 and 7 minutes. On  Goat Polo (8) and Calculus (11), you can hear a Tibetan voice. Rikoniki (9) will sound familiar to those who know the Frank's Syn clavier work. Piano (10), the longest track is fantastic, but it is cut before the end. I don't know, maybe the downloading. Hope it will not happen with the CD.

A precision : some of this tracks are excerpts. So the duration is different.
