Hey guys,

I'm putting together a spooky playlist for my next podcast since it goes out on Halloween night.  Anyone have any thoughts as to some really moody or atmospheric spooky prog rock songs?  I've got a few already, but I'm interested in other people's thoughts.

Anyone?

Hmm, maybe a song from Univers Zero's album Heresie?  Particularly "Jack the Ripper".

You can listen to the song on Cuneiform's website in its entirety if you're interested: http://cuneiformrecords.com/

Just click on the little speaker underneath Heresie.

As many versions of "Season of the Witch" as you can find ... and if you don't have at least 5 ... you are a NEWB!

Hehehe!

It also depends how weird you wanna get ... because most people here are going to list Black Sabbath 100 times ... and they really only have 2 or 3 songs that should be there and the rest is cheap advertising for nothing ... and simple ... good show Ozzie! That's why he is on MTV after all ... and you are not!

Probably best to take the word "prog" out of it ... otherwise you are going to be desperatly limited and not having enough fun, and too much music is centered around a lyric or two ... and the music has nothing in it ... except some moody this or that which is supposed to be this or that ... typical Halloween actually ... all plastic and fake!

There are a few ... out there in "prog" ... but ... I would stay away from the cheap stuff ...

Pulsar - Halloween
Goblin - Several of their soundtrax fit well
Message - 1st album
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Weirder stuff:
White Noise - Electric Storm in Hell
Brainticket - Cottonwood Hill

There are som oddities out there ... there was a band called "Coven" that did some nice things ... there was an American band called "Lucifer" that had an interesting album ... there are recordings with Anton LaVey on them if you fancy some stronger stuff ...

For you to find these, and appreciate any of it at all ... you have to stop using the word "prog" or any other denomination ... you either look for something or you don't ... and when you limit the searches the chances of finding something drop considerably.

And no ... I'm not naming the Season of the Witch songs right now ... and who cares if at least one of them is not "prog" ... actually 2 of them!

Do you want a show? Or just talk?

If you want something light and about the only song I used to like on Giant For A Day: Spooky Boogie.
For some other recommendations from me see the thread Epignosis linked to.
I just recently got into Univers Zero and they really do have some creepy music.

hey man, this guy only has like 4 posts... you might want to cut him some slack about wanting prog and just recommend a couple spooky proggy songs, he probably isnt interested in your views on genre labels

There are examples listed for him and then some.

Again ... it depends on how far he wants to go on his show. And it is rather wierd to think that "prog" can (or can't) do Halloween, but Boris Pickett can ... it is a holiday for fun, and you might not be of the religious persuation that believes in such ... but others obviously like to have fun with it.

Let's just say, that on my list ... you would have to make a choice ... do you want fake stuff a la Weird AL and Boris Pickett and one Who song ... or do you want to play some far out, different and totally out of this universe stuff ... that exists out there ... and I would not forget Mussorgsky, btw ... even done up by ELP ... which no one mentioned. Or Tomita's version of Night on Bald Mountain.

I'll take this further ...

Give you a tri-fecta that Guy Guden used to do a lot of ...

Curved Air - Vivaldi withy Cannons
Curved Air - Same but the Live version
Esperanto - Dance Macabre
String Driven Thing - Tympany for the Devil

... goodness ... I've already put together a show that was over 6 hours with the stuff I mentioned alone ... !!!

Ooooh.  Kate Bush's Get Out Of My House from The Dreaming.

I did see you were looking for something ambient.  Steve Roach's Darkest Before Dawn is over an hour so if you were planning on doing about an hour it would be perfect. LOL

I've always thought Kate Bush's Leave It Open is much spookier than Get Out Of My House.

Anyway, the prog fans are much scarier than the music could ever hope to be.

Not a prog act (proggish arguably) but I wanted to bring up Wire's Practice Makes Perfect, one of the most unsettling songs I know. Turn it up loud, listen in the dark, all the way through.
