I voted that I like them, although it's more than just like them. I guess my vote would be in the middle of the choice I made and the second one. I would say that they are surely in the top 20 bands that I love the most.

The last option. Van der Graaf Generator is, together with Rush, one of most overrated classic prog bands. Overclever lyrics, "spreading"  but forgettable tunes, les or more boring long tracks, simply - a kind of genuine "snobbish" music. My favourite Van der Graaf album is surprisingly The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome - unique piece, because it´s fresh, melodic and cheerful. (No wonder it´s underrated here.)

I´m afraid that I´m alone with my opinion here again.Ouch

No you aren't. I have heard others express their apathy about them.

I could not say which is my favourite band; even top four or ten will change depending on mood. But VdGG will ofzen appear among the top four, whatever my mood is, so I went for that option.

BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue.

Good band, but not imo on the same platform as Genesis, Yes, KC, to nick a line from their PA bio.  I agree with many of Gandalf's points but not to the same degree, so they don't sway my opinion that much.

Perhaps all about the prog is a simplicity?
Perhaps we can thinh in different ways...but  VDGG are an honest group, out of the business, and absolutelly free....
The Quiet Zone and the Pleasure Dome against the macrodinosaurs of the old and middle age progrock?
Perhaps is the Nadir´s Big Chance for all of us to listen that what we want!!!

The doors is open!Clap

I tnink you are too subjective . "Boring long tracks"? If you don't enjoy them it doesn't mean they are boring.
"Overclever lyrics"? Too expressive maybe but show me at least one overclever Hammills song. Have you heard Refugees, House with no door, Still Life  - they aren't "melodic and cheerful"?
+ I'm sure you wouldn't be alone with your opinion here but I hope your stereotype will change some day. And THEN you'll discover Great, Deep and Wonderful world of VdGG and Peter Hammill Wink

Would you catch the final words of mine?

In my top 4. Jostling for third place with Yes, after Genesis and Rush.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Oh! That´s somewhat ridiculous! When I´ve recorded myself my first VdGG album (Pawn Hearts), you wasn´t alive yet! I´ve been their fanboy in the University and I own 6 their albums on MC´s up to this day, but I don´t listen it yet. Simply the taste used to change in time.Wink
