Just a bit of fun and curiosity. I've taken a favourite piece of music of mine from 1976, which is off of quite an obscure album that I consider to be one of the best finds I've made over the last couple of years, and placed that long piece against the longest piece from the album that is ranked number one at PA from 1976.  Don't vote unless you've listened to each in full, and please comment.

Here is "Osorezan" (which due to the length is split into several parts):

And "Lunar Sea":

Osorezan - a japanese classic!  A pity the rest of their stuff never sounded like this.

It is indeed! I like a lot of other Geinoh Yamashirogumi music, but yeah, it is a pity that they didn't do more of that ilk.

I think this is awesome though too:

And I love Yamato Gensho.

Just posting those clips for people that don't know them.

Akira is a great OST and I've been introduced to Geinoh's music thanks to this movie. I think he fits better into WorldMusic, even if Japanese folk has traditional elements that make it similar to acid psychedelia, specially in the percussions. But I can't not vote for Lunar Sea that's one of my favourite tracks of one of my favourite bands.
Thanks for the samples, anyway.
Curiosity killed a cat, Schroedinger only half.

It's not a he, actually, but a collective with many musicians/ people founded by Tsutomu Ohashi.  I first discovered Geinoh Yamashirogumi's music due to watching Akira many years ago, but it was only in the last couple of years that I discovered the album Osorezan / Do No Kenbai, which led me to suggest GY for PA.  I found out about it when I did a google search which led me to this --> http://www.verygoodplus.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18042 Excellent music mentioned in that topic, I think (and highlights kinds of music I'm really into -- I did a topic at PA before looking for similar recommendations).

I agree that the overall work is best described as World music, but it was particularly Osorezan / Do No Kenbai that led the collective to be included in Avant.  I thought it might be better suited to Eclectic considering more of the discography (didn't expect it would be accepted for Prog Folk as a World music group with psych elements in various works).

I love "Osorezan", and of course this poll is really just an excuse to share it with people -- thought quite a few might check it out by pitting it up against a track from the top-rated album of its year. Had hoped more would comment on it no matter what they voted for (I love the funky vibe in it). For Camel, I'm more of a Snow Goose guy (especially from A Live Record). By the way, I also like Geinoh...'s other 1976 album very much, Chi No Hibiki.... And I think Geinoh Yamashirogumi Live (1978) is excellent.

Osorezan is an interesting piece which should be heard in its entire length indeed. It has some beautiful parts. Yet I prefer Lunar Sea.
