I'm actually constantly amazed by the breadth of knowledge of the genre by some of our younger members. a lot of them can put us oldies to shame!

Maybe you've been listening to the wrong kind of metal.  There's some excellent avant-metal stuff out there, and a lot of post-stuff has drone/noise influences.

Given the stuff you've listed up there, Kayo Dot (all of their styles) would be right up your alley.

I do know a decent amount about classic prog, too.  I don't dislike the genre but I don't listen to it too often.

Although I am a huge fan of Yes.

Probably 20 times.  It's 15 minutes long and I'm trying to learn to play it, so I'm trying to get the song more or less memorized by sound.

EDIT: Nope, closer to 30.

I hopped on the prog bandwagon before 18 and you'll have to pry my cold dead fingers to get me off.

By the way, we will not be around to need you or feed you when you are 64 as we will likely all be dead, so there Tongue.

I'm 17 and vanilla prog metal is one of my least favourite subs. My two favourites as of right now would have to be tech/extreme and exp/post and crossover as well, although avant has been grabbing my attention more than ever lately.

I'm 18 and bands like Kansas and Rush got me into prog; newer prog and metal didn't come until much much later.

Now I love it all, though. Thumbs Up

I'm 17 and I don't listen to much metal nowadays, but I love albums in every single subgenre on this site plus alternative rock, folk, indie, experimental, ambient, post-rock, singer-songwriter, electronic, acoustic, black metal, classic rock, shoegaze, doom metal, post-punk, dark ambient, trip-hop, death metal, industrial, pop, neofolk, folk rock, avant-garde, blues, new wave, slowcore, jazz, classical, etc, etc, etc...  There isn't a single genre of music that I don't/haven't listened to.

I'm 16 and listen to a great variety of prog (and other). Though I do listen to the classics, I am of the opinion the a lot of the so-called classic masterpieces of prog really aren't as good as some people think... I would name any for fear of being completely hated though!

I'm surprised how many really young people we have here.Stern Smile

Surel, it's great that you love prog, but...

GET OFF THE INTERNET!!

Go out, go to a gig, have a drink, kiss a girl, do yoga, go fishing, ride a bike, climb a mountain!

Again and again!

(I should be doing it too. I'm on computer because my girlfriend is in bed, snoring badly.)Pinch

I'm 27 and on the computer at least 10 hours a day because I work at my home computer and I don't like crowds and I drink plenty at home thank you very much and I would kiss a girl but I'm married and I can't bend like I used to to do yoga of any sort and I can't fish worth a damn but I tried once and caught a leaf and I haven't owned a bike since I was 12 and the mountains are three hours away.

Also, I'm lazy.  Sleepy

Hrmph.

No, but it must be difficult to relate to the 80s metal aesthetic unless you heard it in an 'early' stage.  I think those who were not already into proto metal a la UFO, Rainbow, JP in the 70s would have found the drastic increase in crunch in the 80s hard to come terms with. There will be exceptions, of course.  That said, I would say that people who listen to only and only metal and dislike mostly everything else have somewhat limited horizons in music, but then I would say that of people who listen to only stadium rock as well, so ignore me, I am an elitist. Wink
