Quote The act, effective April 21, 2000, applies to the online collection of personal information by persons or entities under U.S. jurisdiction from children under 13 years of age. It details what a website operator must include in a privacy policy, when and how to seek verifiable consent from a parent or guardian, and what responsibilities an operator has to protect children's privacy and safety online including restrictions on the marketing to those under 13. While children under 13 can legally give out personal information with their parents' permission, many websites altogether disallow underage children from using their services due to the amount of paperwork involved

...we are a .com website - technically under current US measures that means we fall under U.S. jurisdiction. We have no provision, means or inclination of obtaining parent's permission for any user under the age of 13, therefore our terms and conditions state you must be over the age of 13 to join our site.

Then perhaps when new members sign up, if they say they are below the ag of 13, have it kick back and say they are underage.

I think its awesome that we have 12 year-olds interested in prog rock.

i'm just gonna say it outloud- The fact that anyone can simply LIE of being over the age of 12, not give out any personal information and succesfuly get away with it makes that perhaps the most STUPID law i've ever heard. i dont care if i come off arrogant and spoiled considering its only 9 days of being gone until i turn 13, but REALLY.

Its the inconsistency that bothers me. Some 12 year olds are banned, some are not.

Yup, let's be consistant and "ban" all 12 year olds. Thanks for repeatedly raising this issue Ian, I'm sure all the 12 year olds will be queuing up to thank you.

There are some things even 50 isn't old enough for.

Only the ones you choose not to ban.

Wait a minute, I'm coming down on the side of users of all ages, in case you missed it. I'm speaking up against what I feel is discrimination.

So Dean, what does your "Policy" state about abusive language?

ProgArchives is a website with poorly conceived and randomly enforced policy.
