Welcome to a ship of the few. Some in my top 10 too.

I'm glad there's someone else who likes it. I REALLY like Genesis first album, but there are approximately 10 people in the world who like it as well, i guess. FGTR has beautiful atmosphere, i can't help loving it. The songs -their tunes are remind of waking spring after the long winter. It's not foxtrot, but it's great.

^ I wouldn't say ten people, but ... relatively few people on the globe.

Edit: BTW, listening to "Fireside Song" and "The Serpent" right now.

Here would be my top 10 Genesis songs (in no particular order):

1. The Musical Box
2. The Return of the Giant Hogweed
3. The Fountain of Salmacis
4. The Cinema Show
5. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight
6. Watcher of the Skies
7. Supper's Ready
8. Firth of Fifth
9. One for the Vine
10. Dance On A Volcano

This was quite difficult as there's so many more that I would have liked to have added like The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, it, Eleventh Earl of Mar, Cuckoo Cocoon, Afterglow, In the Cage, Get 'Em Out By Friday, among others.

^ You know what some people would do? Add the whole "Lamb" (the album) as one freaking song to such a list. True that.

Yeah, but that's just a bit obsessive to me as I think The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is one of their weakest overall. Now, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound, A Trick of the Tail, and Wind  & Wuthering, on the other hand, it becomes increasingly harder for me to narrow down favorite songs as there's so many that enjoy from these recordings.

Yeah, but that's just a bit obsessive to me as I think The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is one of their weakest overall. Now, Nursery Cryme, Fotrot, Selling England By The Pound, A Trick of the Tail, and Wind  & Wuthering, on the other hand, it becomes increasingly harder for me to narrow down favorite songs as there's so many that enjoy from these recordings.

Fotrot?  You mean there's a Genesis album out there I've never heard?  Tongue

The Lamb is my least favorite of the Gabriel years (if you don't count FGTR) and the Hackett years.  There are some really good songs on the album and I absolutely love parts of it, but as a whole piece of music, I think it is weaker than everything else between Trespass and Wind & Wuthering.

The Lamb is responsible for one of my favorite Genesis pieces (although only appearing live):  In the Cage/Cinema Show/Slippermen/Afterglow medley (this also happens to be my favorite medley of all time as it could almost qualify as simply a 16 minute epic in its own right).

Typo corrected. Big smile

There are parts of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway that I love: In The Cage, the title track of course, Hairless Heart, Cuckoo Cocoon, Carpet Crawlers, The Colony of Slippermen, among others, but it was just too much for me. A bit daunting for sure. If I had to pick a favorite Genesis album, it would probably be Foxtrot for the simple fact that I thought the band was really at the top of their abilities as songwriters. Tony Banks never sounded better IMHO. Hackett was, as usual, incredibly creative and, though, Nursery Cryme displayed his abilities as a soloist and accompanist to great effect, it was on Foxtrot that I thought his sound was fully integrated into the group. A case in point Watcher of the Skies where he has some tasty guitar licks and awesome volume swells.

....but, for me, the one Genesis song that encapsulates everything that is wonderful about the band is The Musical Box. In this regard, I agree with the guy who runs Genesis fansite The Waiting Room.

..And Then There Were Three is really where I cut the line from Genesis. Undertow and Down and Out would probably be my favorite songs prior to Hackett's departure. If you like pop music, I suppose they were good at doing this commercial stuff, but I don't like pop music or else why would I be on a progressive rock forum discussing this kind of music?  For me, they wasted their talent for the almighty dollar which is what many great musicians have done and continue to do.

I don't think they did it to earn a buck, I think they all wanted to move on, make something different. Oh, and the forums aren't all about prog, really. In the General Music and Just for Fun sections we talk about everything from prog to noise, and from j-pop to free jazz.
