I prefer this version to the original. Considering that it's an overly saccharine song in the first place, Magenta and Christina Booth especially have managed to make an astonishing salvage.

Unneccesary and offensive comment.
Absolutely agree. Christina is an ANGEL 👼🏻 with a most beautiful, emotive voice.

Also, this song without a keyboard is sacrilege.  This song takes out everything that made it special.  An abomination.

So Magenta's lead singer Christina Booth is not Kate Bush or Patti Smith, mkay ... but you know, so what?

Her vocals are simply not as bad as you say, and Magenta does very well with this song given what they have to work with.  Besides, Rob Reed wouldn't sound very convincing on the keyboard part.  Remember also that the original "Lucky Man" only had the Moog solo added as an afterthought.

If there is a valid criticism of Magenta, I'd say it would be that their original material isn't as entertaining as their covers, which speaks to a whole different underlying problem - that of Reed's rather superficial take on what comprises truly "progressive" rock.  A long suite here, a melodic guitar solo there is supposed to make you Prog?  I mean they might actually have been up to Marillion par, but for a considerable dearth of talent in the lyrics and composition departments!Shocked

If anything I'd say the most valid criticism of the group would

Considering that I tried to see Christina on PA, how could I not enjoy this cover?
It's enough different from the original to be appealing. Of course I have to forget ELP.

The coda is a bit too long and mellow, this is I think what leaves the listener with a sensation not as good as it should be.

Followed the link - thanks, like some of the previous comments it didn't come across as was probably intended, as a Magenta cover it didn't come up to what I feel is their high standard, and as a staple from the ELP repetoire it didn't compare. However a pleasant listen but not one I'd either buy or consider listening to again...

Yep thats sums up my feelings. I can understand Snowy's comments and Christina's voice does not really suit this song bearing in mind Lake's rich baritone on the original is impossible to match but she adds he own stamp nevertheless and the guitar work of Chris Fry and Rob Reed is certainly excellent.

The guitar work in Magenta is always excellent. It's just this version is a bit "saccharine" to my ears. I think they could have done more with the song too. And the lack of any synth solo is unforgivable for me. All sounds a bit cold too.

But...I don't hate it. Just nice. That's all.

I love Magenta, but that version left me cold to be honest. Shame.

Available as a download from Magenta's website. Has a nice Christmassy feel to it. Apparently it was part of a now shelved ELP tribute project.
