Ive been on a sonic youth binge and feel the need to spread the love.

They might warrant some consideration for inclusion but Im borderline on that topic and i dont want the thread ignored after a week so lets just call this an appreciation thread and if the topic gets brought up ... Big smile

appreciate! one of the best bands to come out of the 80s let alone the fact that their still active and churning out music.

Krautrock and Crimson influences abound along with an extreme sense of exploration and experimentation. its like Lou Reed got together with glenn Branca and the guys from Faust (minus the humor). especially their early albums. REALLY digging Evol and their debut at this moment.

I just heard their debut EP in the reissued form with plenty of extra material and I'm impressed. Truly experimental music. And indeed I can see the progressive connections. If more of their music is like that, they should be considered as 80s prog-related on PA.

I can't understand what's remotely interesting about this band. I keep going back to them because every description makes it sound as though I should love them. No luck though.

you mean you can listen to Trilogy or a song like cross the breeze and not understand why anyone could enjoy it?

I like Murray Street just as much as Daydream Nation and other. The band is pretty consistent, but they never make anything really great for me. It's cool rokc music I'd dig every now and then, and it sounds like great record store music you could just pop into and listen to a few songs and leave, but nothing very very compelling.

You're not the only one who has been on a Sonic Youth binge. Big smile

I think mine ended two weeks ago or so, but the month before that I have pretty much listened to them exclusively. I only own four albums of them though (EVOL up to Goo), of which Daydream Nation probably takes the top spot closely followed by Sister. Oh... Daydream Nation is just pure greatness from the beginning to the end, and songs like SIlver Rocket and Cross The Breeze just kock you down with all of their passionate power.

I've had the same experience. I guess I'm just too pretentious to like music that doesn't go all the way in the avant/noise department.

It's not the lack of Avant that bothers me. I listen to as much Katy Perry and Lady GaGa as I do Avant. It's the lack of anything remotely interesting or emotional.

Emotions are for squares. Ditto for those post-89 hacks you mentioned.

I stopped caring about anything you had to say three years ago.
