The gathering Prog or not..?

i really suport you man.

that things just doesnt belong to the pgoressive scene.

i dont see why they have that kind of suport. the death metal subgerne just make my head hurts. i cant stand to much listen to that double pedal drumm, goes no where.

You might be confusing them with the Death Metal band "The Gathering". The "The Gathering" listed in the archives don't use double drums, at least I cannot recall any song that does.

Anyway, they're a great band and are really progressive. They started as a Gothic Metal band and have progressed quite significantly. Listen to "How to Measure a Planet", it's awesome. You should try some samples first to decide if you like the vocals though.

I agree with Manticore about NIGHTWISH : this isn't prog at all, simply power symphonic metal, or something like that.

Up till 95', The Gathering were a Doom Metal band. They were fairly innovative in the genre in their extensive use of synths, but yes, they weren't prog.

BUT, starting from the album Mandylion which came out that year, and up until now, the Gathering have moved further into Gothic/Progressive/Experimental Rock. This can be clearly seen in their albums "How to Measure a Planet" and "If_Then_Else".

It's quite incredible, actually, but this band pretty much reinvents itself in every new album. So please don't be quick to judge them because of who they WERE.

It's exactly like Vonarga said, they used to do doom or gothic metal, but later on in a quite experimental and innovative way. I like very much Mandylion, Nighttime Birds and If then else. Later on they started to introduce some ambient electronic elements, which was not so much my cup of tea anymore. Anyway since Max obviously likes them, it's up to him whether they are here or not, it's his site!

The Gathering is more progressive than Within Temptation (the last band isn't mentioned at progarchives and what I have heard of it I think that's correct).
