How underrated can he be if it's all that has been discussed here for a month?

I think he's distinctly rated.

I think most bass-players in prog are underrated. I think this is because of the emphasis on harmony, atmosphere and conceptual thinking in prog. In the more rhythmical forms of prog (Can for instance) the bass-playing has a bigger role.

I asked my godson, who is a professional bass player, for his opinion.

His view is that Lake is perfectly competent, but not nearly in John Wetton or Geddy Lee's class. So probably not underrated.

He's a damn good vocalist, though.

Underrated as a producer.
Everyone knows rock attained perfection in 1974, it's a scientific fact.

Correctly rated as a lyricist........

I think his bass playing is often too quiet to judge, at least against people like Squire and Wetton who have theirs so loud and "in your face".

But don't forget the 'Mirrors' section of Schizoid Man; he's a groove monster in that track!

If I vote ''Yes'' does that mean he is good but but not recognised as such?
If I vote ''No'' does that mean he is good and recognised as such? (or bad and recognised as such)

So this is not a vote about whether he is good or not just whether other people think he is good or not. So I am voting on what I believe other people's perceptions of him to be rather that what I think?

Severely underrated by the Prog community!   He had the same guitar instructor as Bob Fripp & engenders a similar approach to his six-string playing, and his four-string bass guitar work is sublime.

Listen to his work on the song "Schizoid Man" for a clear example of a very young, 22 year-old Lake blasting away on his Fender Jazz bass!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7h4qT6OrdQ

...the song that started it all, IMHO!

...not to mention Lake's guitar work, check out @ 1:30!   The guy would wail on that axe, I'm sorry we never heard more of that in this band's music.  I saw this tour twice, it was "nice" (pun intended).

Just saw that video, man, that is very precise guitar playing. He seems to blend his bass lines with Emerson's keyboards, that's why its hard to pick out Lake's bass sometimes. But Lake is able to keep up with Emerson's playing, and that is impressive.

That's what you get when you study guitar with the same teacher that Fripp had, back in the day!!

I regret that Lake & Fripp were never able to continue their relationship after Lake's departure from Crimson, who knows what they may have come up with?

This is a GREAT article that I post often, it has some excellent early Crimso & Yes bits, and a picture of a very young Greg Lake hanging out at the Marquee Club in London!

I have to go with no and it's not because I don't like his bass work but more because I don't read many opinions around here underrating his abilities.

He is the best bass player ELP has ever had. Headbanger
