Today would have been Frank Zappas birthday (and it's also my mum's, haha)

So to celebrate his genius, lets list things about him:

He was one of the greatest and most innovative guitarists of all time!

Happy birthday, Uncle Frank.

He was completely right about religion and politics, revealing the truth which most people frown upon, basically his anarchistic ways

Yes, from this year, but the one in Baltimore is a copy of Vilnius's monument, it was presented to Baltimore from Lithuanian fans this summer

He was a man of rare musical talent. IMHO he was a modern version of the great composers of the 18th and 19th centurirs. Also, what's not to love about a guy who wrote unabashedly about how dopey we all are! "Dumb all over, a little ugly on the side........."Wink

I just wanna see 200 Motels again! I na double bill with Head! And if the theater has any class with Zachariah right after it or El Topo! ... that should be a night to delight a lot of weirdo's!

He was an interesting person who made interesting music that wz creepy and subtly beautiful at the same time. i just now started listenin 2 him mainly Hot Rats, Were only in it for the Money, and Joe's Garage. They're very different than most of the prog you would regularly hear. Great musician and composer and taken way too early. If u ask me, he prob had a lot more to offer.

RIP ZappaCry

The hard part of it all ... is that Frank was fighting, THEN, exactly the same thing as NOW.

That commercial interests and this and that ... were/are preventing people from exploring music all around, and I am not sure that a time like this is a good place for his work ... anyone that would create half the songs he did and play them today would get trashed senseless and be thought of as pretentious and full of it ... and on top of it thinking it is good and saying it is good ... what kind of ego is that?

I am not sure that we can tell, or know, or appreciate, many artists today, for what they are and what they do ... this is a time for numbers and success and fame ... and no one out there, and fans included of course, are willing to stand up and say something about it except playing kis$ash to some band ... it's good because they like it!

In the end, it has a lot to do with the care, attention, and inteligent discussion about an artist (of which this board is a major part!!!!!) ... and sadly, one of the comments earlier in this thread, tells you ... exactly what Frank is not ... and the very thing that is NOT what Frank himself wanted to be remembered by ... that he is a very good guitarist. First and foremost, he is a fabulous composer, and arranger ... and that he also plays on top of it is some icing on the cake ... but it is the very reason why so many times he trashed his "fans" ... and many times put down the guitar and simply conducted the band ... much to the chagrin of many of his fans, including one that posted here it was the most disappointing concert he ever saw ... it's almost like saying that this person did not know anything about Frank's music, except the guitar ...

Apreciate the man for his work ... not just guitar ... because a guitar was not all he played or did, and all of his albums show it!
