Cyprus-born experimental musician Mick Karn passed away today.

The Japan co-founder had been battling with advanced-stage cancer since July of past year. Musicians of the Burning Shed label (more notably Porcupine Tree) reunited and released products to cover Karn's expenses.

RIP.

A sad loss indeed - a great musician who could have done so much more if he'd lived on.

Shame to hear. I'll listen to his Polytown album with Torn and bozzio soon (which is fantastic).

I am not that familiar with Mick Karn.  I do have the Polytown album as well as the Rain Tree Crow album.  I'm not really familiar with Japan.  Did he ever perform with Bill Bruford with Earthworks, or one of his solo or other collaborative albums?  It seems as though I have associated his name with Bruford for some reason or another.

Karn & Bruford played together on David Torn's "Door X" album.
Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

Cry The most distinctive and gifted bass guitarist of his generation - you hear a piece and instantly knew it was him playing. A sad loss.

Ah, I cannot believe this fact.

His performance was very original.

I will repeatedly listen to "Bestial Cluster" and "JBK" for a while.

Very sad news indeed. The man played a huge part on the musical stages of my life. Inspiring, inspirational, influential, progressive. Let us lower our heads and raise a glass to this great musician!

A truly gifted musician and one of the finest bass guitarists of his generation - a real loss to music.

Sad news indeed. He was a uniquely gifted player with an immediately recognisable sound. He will be sorely missed.

As for Gerry Rafferty - now that he's gone, shouldn't he be accepted here? Surely "Baker Street" (probably his best-known song) is 100% prog folk!
