Anyone ever give this music a listen? I love the guitaring/classy style of it all and the brazillian language sounds so great with the vocals. Youtube is down right now otherwise I would post some songs.
Got any nice bossa nova recs? |

Portuguese language, Brazilian variant.
João Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto are your ideal starting points. |

From my days in Brazil, these were ... a dime a dozen ... so to speak, just like progrock or anything else. But if you really want to trip down these areas and how some folks took that music and went further with it, you might check out the early stuff by Egberto Gismonti, which is considered "jazz" in many circles, but hardly fits that mold, with the exception of an album or two. I also used to have a lot of Milton Nascimiento and Airto Moreira ... and of course Flora Purim (Airto's wife at the time - not sure they are still together or not). Egberto is out there .. he mixes everything and in one album at least (No Caipira) he becomes a modern day Hector Villa Lobos ... In general, both bossa nova and samba, are considered "street", or "popular" music, and it is a bit difficult to find a lot of this stuff taken to the next level. Or .. there is always Sergio Mendez! Good listening! Edited by moshkito - January 11 2011 at 02:02 |

Agreed. They pretty much made the term famous outside of Brazil and were always considered a cut above the pop music players. |

You're not listening to the great music composed in the 50's and 60's then. The quintessential bossa nova recording is, IMO, "Como dizia o poeta", by 'Vinicius de Moraes, Marília Medalha e Toquinho'.
