Calandrinon is a Progressive Folk band from Romania.  Actually, I've known about this band for some time, but haven't  managed to get a copy of their only release until now, the album Galeria De Vise (Gallery of Dreams), released in 2002.    According to the information given on the band's official website, the band started out in the 70's under the name Geneze, which was formed by lead musician Mihai Gherman.  The band later changed its name to Calandrinon.  Two original members remain.and the band is active to date.

The band makes no secret of the huge influence that the prog folk band Phoenix have had on their music, and this can be seen clearly in their compositions.  Other influences listed by Mihai Gherman are Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Yes, as well as other Romanian prog outfits such as Sfinx and Progresiv TM.  The lyrics are in Romanian and deal with topics such as medieval folklore, religion and spiritual destiny.

Although the quality of the production of the CD could be better, and IMO the individual tracks vary in quality, the band has made a sincere effort to produce original and interesting material which is of interest to prog fans.  It should be noted the album "Galeria de Vise" was produced in collaboration with Phoenix drummer Ovidiu Lipan Ţăndărică.

The album can be listened to here

Some more compositions, plus some improved  versions of tracks from the album "Galeria de Vise" can be found here

I look forward to your opinions! Smile

I'm finding it hard to find the true prog in the band, but they do have a slightly experimental, somewhat heavy prog feel. They remind me of Anti-Depressive Delivery a little, fusing the blues-rock with some cool folky-psychedelic elements. Cool stuff, but I would hesitate before thinking about calling them prog.

Is the band signed? That includes them selling the album by themselves.

I've read Calandrinon and I've thought of Romania immidiately.

I've heard that name before...presume in the Cantafabule album (by romanian glory Phoenix).

Yes, they released  "Galeria de Vise" with Taboo Music in 2002.  (a studio in Arad, Romania)  My apologies - I omitted to include this information.  @ Andrea Cortese:  Yes, this is almost certainly the inspiration for the band's name.  As mentioned above, Phoenix has had a huge influence on the band, in particular Mihai Gherman.  The Calandrinon bird is a mythical bird which comes to the bedside of a sick person to decide his or her fate.

In that case I'll ask the Prog Folk team for the evaluation. The Phoenix influence is beyond doubt.

Ok, thanks!  Smile

The CD is available.   When I contacted the band about a year ago, I was told that the CD was sold out.  I recently discovered a supplier in Germany who seems to have multiple copies of the CD.

I haven't seen the Prog-Folk team members around for the last days, and the band is still under evaluation. I think the best strategy to keep this running would be to stalk them via the private messenger Wink Tongue

I just posted an update and link to the on-line streaming 'Galeria de Vise' album for the rest of the Prog Folk team.  I think they probably do belong here, but will wait for Ken and Sean Trane to comment.

Definitely a lot of similarities to Phoenix, and I even detected some Pink Floydian influence, especially on the early parts of the record.

So that's a probable yes.   There is indeed psychedelic influence there.  I will wait for the team's decision, and write the biography if accepted.  Thanks!

Hello,

Any updates about this? It would surely be interesting to have Calandrinon listed on PA and help more people discover the band!

Thanks!
