I always avoided Opeth due to my dislike of heavy metal and death metal growl like vocals. You can imagine my surprise when I first heard the song Windowpane. It was wonderful and there wasn’t a growl to be heard. I purchased Damnation and I really love it. My question is what would be the next best album to get for someone who doesn’t like death metal vocals but does love Opeth’s softer side.

Watershed in all likely hood, of the 7 tracks only 3 of them have growls. If you end up finding that you can accept the growls then from there its got to be the triumvirate of My Arms, Your Hearse; Still Life and Blackwater Park.

You could end up really disliking any other Opeth. Besides just the lack of growls, Damnation doesn't relate much to the rest of their work.

But yeah Watershed makes the most sense.

I started exactly where you are now...but there isn't other Opeth that doesn't feature at least some harsh vocals. But Mikael has some of the best harsh vocals out there.
 
Listen to the sample of "The Drapery Falls" from Blackwater Park which features both. "Hessian Peel" is another great combo song from Watershed. In fact, just get Watershed, let it sink in for awhile, and you'll know whether you want to go any further after that.

I'm not a huge growl fan myself, but make an exception for Opeth.

Listening to "Ghost of Perdition" - one of the best metal songs ever created, and plenty of death growls. Missing out on this would be a tragedy.
 
I forgot how amazing Opeth was, been off of them for awhile.

That seems a bit vulgar for all fans. I like those vocals, but I know people who don't like the vocals but love the music. It's more a preference of style rather than your physical ability to listen to them.

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll definitely be getting Watershed ASAP. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get use to the growls but I’ll certainly give it a try. It’ll be good to broaden my musical horizons.Thumbs Up
