I have to agree on that one.
But, I'd vote for Santana being I think they are the better band...for the most part.

I go for early Chicago but when they turned to pop power ballads Santana buries them.

Although there were strong jazz influences i think PA's classification of Santana as Jazz Rock Fusion is stretching the genre somewhat.
IMO Chicago's first three studio albums were slightly better than Santana's first three and Chicago IV is better than Lotus, but not by much. However, Chicago produced nothing of the quality of Caravanserai (few bands have) and Borboletta is also better than anything Chicago produced after Chicago V.
On balance I think the incredible Caravanserai and their magnificent performance at Woodstock just gets Santana over the line. .

I kind of see it as Caravanserai/Welcome vs. Chicago Transit Authority/Chicago II. All great jazz rock albums. Caravanserai is brilliant and the best of the four IMO. The nods goes to Santana.

Tough question. They both have additional layers (for Chicago the brass section, for Santana the percussion(ists)), they are both tight as hell, very creative, wide range of music, a few commercial tunes each... I grew up with Chicago though, it's gonna have to be them.

Wrong comparison: Chicago v (Carlos Santana's brother Jorge's band) Malo would make more sense. |
