I know there must be a thread on this already, but I couldn't find one.
Tell me about your local prog scene. Are there any cool bands, venues, etc. that are relatively underground that represent prog well? Is there a prog scene at all? In my city (Jackson, MS) , there is a very small music scene, but hardly any prog to my knowledge. There are a handful of metal bands, but it's mostly indie rock or hip hop. Do any of you guys have a good local scene?
On a similar note, my prog band is planning a southeastern U.S. tour this summer, so any info regarding prog or metal scenes in that area are especially welcome

I live near Philadelphia PA which some people think is the prog capital of the world. Trust me folks. It really isn't. ;)

None that I know of in my state. Where I live it's all blues, country and run of the mill rock.

Wish there was a scene here. Most of my friends give me funny looks when I talk about music. There's been a few good shows around the area and in Detroit over the years, but there really isn't a "scene."

Wait what? I've lived in Pittsburgh, PA my whole life and never heard that before. The prog scene here is non existent. In fact my band and my friend's band (we used to be in the same band), are the only prog groups I know of.....and we're not exactly touring a lot.....

From the same town as Kurdt Vanderhoof of Metal Church and Presto Ballet. He no longer lives here and no shows are being played around here though... Aberdeen has some great local bands, nothing I'd call prog though.

Only few bands I know from where I live are Taliesin (prog metal) and Aeon of Horus (tech metal), both of which are fantastic. There's probably a few more, although I haven't really looked very hard.

The deputy manager at the video game store I worked for over christmas mentioned that he played guitar in a couple of bands. I went along to one of his gigs and was pleasantly surprised; they play a kind of mishmash of proggy, metally, punky post-rock type stuff and only had time to play 3 songs during a 30 minute set! His other band is probably even proggier - a math-rock guitar/drums duo doing some seriously complex/noisy stuff. Of the thirty-or-so people at that gig I was one of perhaps two or three people who seemed genuinely into it! I've not encountered any other interesting bands in my city so far, but there's a pretty good local gig circuit in the area so he's probably not the only guy doing proggy/experimental stuff.

No such thing where I live. This town is mostly know as a former Punk-Rock hotbed and the Portuguese capital of Rockabilly.

Hello all,
There really isn't a prog scene where I am. There was a really cool post-rock band called TO BE A HIGH POWERED EXECUTIVE, but they broke up. I saw them twice (great live band) and they had an awesome CD called WE Don't Want it Safe, We Want it Secret
TO BE A HIGH POWERED EXECUTIVE, please come back!!!!!

Montréal: Zilch. Just a bunch of crap indie bands. Spaced Out is worth checking out for those into Liquid Tension Experiment, Planet X but I haven't heard about any gigs lately & their wbsite is not been updated for a while. Just too good for the masses. They have a following in Europe though.

Why yes, there is, and it consists of my friend and I playing acoustic guitars in a local bar once a month
![]() There is something oh so satisfying for me to perform a 16 minute long original song (it's actually over 30 minutes, but I had to arrange it for acoustics so half had to be cut altogether) in front of a small audience that is used to hearing classic rock, blue grass, and alt country type stuff. We do a few other originals, most in the 10 minute range, along with some more standard classic rock. We also mix in Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Flower Kings, and even a song by Aufklarung (look em up on the archives......Italian band with one album from 1994, feature the singer of another obscure Italian band, Asgard). We actually do get a good response, partly because we always have at least half a dozen close friends there to cheer us on (which makes the rest of the people take more notice of us it seems) But other than that, the music "scene" consists of covers bands mainly playing 80's and 90's hits with the occasional "alternative" type band and some old guys who have managed to eek out a living playing blues and bluegrass type stuff and are staples at the bars around town. I had a full prog band in college (we did a kind of Rush meets Floyd style, is the best I can describe it......with some ELP bombastic tendencies thrown in). We played maybe 8 gigs, all in houses and apartments. None of the bars or clubs would touch us because we didn't do any well known covers (though we did do 2112 and Echoes ) |

Well, I live in a suburb about 40 minutes from NYC, so, between Westchester County and the city there are PLENTY of venues. Thing is, I have never been on a bill with another Prog band. I'm sure they're out there, I just haven't seen them. My band Ceiling Unlimited has even played "Progressive nights" at certain venues and still nothing. I kind of like it that way because we REALLY stand out.

I don't think you could get 50 musicians in this city to say that Nirvana isn't the best there ever was. If Seattle has a prog scene, it is, quite literally, underground.
