The Krautrock Space

I've heard most of Faust's latter-day albums (was just listening to one now, in fact), and can say for the most part that I like them all.  They can be a bit one-sided, picking up where the song "Krautrock" and the "Munic and Elsewhere" album left off, that is to say, harsh distorted pummeling jams.  Ravvivando is pretty typical of this approach.  If you like the more unpredictable, eclectic nature of the first two albums, then I can see where this stuff might seem underwhelming.  C'est Com... Com...Complique is probably the most contemplative and texured latter-day album, with some more soothing Stereolab-like moments, and less of the harshness.  One you might enjoy is "Patchwork", which takes the fragment/collage approach of The Faust Tapes and brings it up to date.  I first expected a dumb "remix" album, but it's really better than that.  Another good one is "You Know Faust", which has a more variety and surprises than the average Faust album.

 

Ravvivando may be my favorite later day Faust album. However, You Know Faust is also wonderful. More like eariler Faust then other later Faust albums. I'd also recommend there lastest two Faust Is Last and Something Dirty as two that really embrace the Faust spirit.

I am pretty jealous of you Keishiro - living in Japan and all. You've got a sprawling avant/psych scene happening right under your nose with a hundred different acts most of them touring insistently. These guys, in particular, are just out of this world. I'm talking cowboy-western-beach-boys krautrock with a love of strange toy instruments and Indian chanting! Unique doesn't even begin to describe this band....

And yes Triceratopsoil(or Colin is it?) I'm definitely looking at you. I gather these guys should be right up your alley.

Just kidding... I once found Trout Mask Replica in the stereo after a night on the town - and up until then couldn't quite grasp why my room-mate was in such a sh*tty mood that particular morning... The volume button was high in the red though.

On the CAN website, Holger states how Tago Mago was put together out of many hours of improvisations ... he says snip here snip there and up in the air, and voila ... Tago Mago.

 

It's hard to explain really, but the continuity and experience in that album is so far out there and crazy that it makes it terrific to listen to ... and very enjoyable.

 

I can't even drink, but closing my eyes and tripping on Augmn or anything else in there is really easy ... and different each and every time, which is even more fun!
