As far as DT music goes, they tend to beat a dead horse.  The 12 step suite in particular is difficult to get through.  At the same time, I think Best of Times, Count of Tuscany and Lost Not Forgotten are classic prog up there with the best.  They have yet to make a perfect album, as far as I'm concerned, but the last two are pretty close.  I know there's a case to made that several of the earlier albums are masterpieces.
Anyway, looking forward to the new one.

I agree about Count, but the Best of Times and Lost Not Forgotten not so much. Bits of LnF annoy me (such as the solos about 2 mins in), and imo, TBoT is a mediocre song with a phenomenal solo at the end. That solo is probably in my top 3 DT solos.
I'm looking forward to the new album too. Jordan Rudess tweeted a picture earlier of a new mellotron that he got, so hopefully we'll get to hear it on the album.

I do like The Best of Times, but indeed most of it is because of the solo at the end. The rest of the song is nice, but kind of cheesy and popish, it could have been much better (and the guitar solo could have been longer, too).

The Ending of The Count of Tuscany is too epic for me to handle sometimes to be honest. Sorry for my vulnerability...

Right on!  All the parts are great.  The intro is what gets me.  I hadn't had a piece of music do that to me in a while and when I heard that intro it just nailed me to the wall.  So so great.  I like the spacey guitar solo in the middle too.

Best of Times is fun because of the Spirit of Radio type riff there as well as the ending solo.  Lyrics are goofy, at best.

I think all of ADToE is great.  It is quite dense though and many times they come back to codas that are not necessary.  Also, things begin to sound the same.  This is the Life is another favorite.  Bridges is awesome.  They opened with that when I saw them on that tour.  All the other songs have their moments, but can be a bit busy.  Petrucci just let lose on writing some complicated stuff...(maybe beyond Portnoy?)

Also, I never ever paid attention to a drum solo in my life until I saw Magini live.  Absolutely compelling!

I second agree with the suggestion of Octavarium.

I don't really like Dream Theater, they're OK but they overdo things too much!

Would say that Divine Wings of Tragedy might fit into what he is probably looking for.  DT had a bit of fusion and Rush in their style even in their more melodic albums while Symphony X were like a proggy Rainbow at that time (got heavier later on).

Ahem. In that case, Octavarium (song) has some very lovely moments.

Also, if you're into the idea of a more symphonic DT, you could try the band Haken. They are the closest I've ever heard prog metal get to symphonic, for what that is worth.

DT could never focus purely on symphonic, because that would mean having to write adequate compositions, rather than bludgeoning us with un-dynamic technical metal riffs every time they can't think of how to transition.

Never could get into them....I listened to several of the early ones years ago and one or two later ones and they never clicked with me.
Can you DT fans recommend their most melodic and accessible one..?
