Anyone heard of this guy??

Wonderful wonderful jazz violinist, but the stuff he plays is very proggy. I went to see him play at Pizza Express jazz club in London, with Martin Taylor on guitar. Martin was supposed to be the headliner but this guy stole the show.

This is in 9/8 mostly, but every so often he throws in a bar of 19/16 just to shake things up.

This CD is amazing - it's two disks of pure violin shredding. CD two is him soloing for 42 minutes! Amazing. It has to be heard to be believed.

Gosh, I remember owning a couple of LPs of his way back in the late 70s or early 80s, when I was into Jean-Luc Ponty (“Surya” was one of the albums). They were mighty good.

 

I’m glad to hear Lockwood is still around and I'd love to hear some of his newer material. Any suggestions?

 

As for the download, I clicked on the link but it leads to an ad telling me how to ‘upload’ files. Do you know how I can get to the MP3?

Globe Trotter, Storyboard and Om Kara are my favourites...

With the Rapidshare thing, scroll right down to the bottom and click "free", then just wait for a new page to load. When you get there, scroll down to the bottom again, and wait for the counter to go down (it's usually something like 60 seconds), and then the link to download will appear.

Wow, thats incredible!!
but i'm not sure if it contains enough rock elements to be added to the archives, but with all the traditional stuff thats been added already, who knows. I'd be more than happy to have him on the site.

Wow! If this track is anything to judge by, I'm sold on these albums.

 

It starts off relatively quietly on an up-tempo, Midddle-Eastern-like tune with minimalistic flute, violin and drums. Then the keyboards and the rest of the instruments hit you straight in the kisser - that's when the fun begins. There's hardly any space for a breather as Lockwood's violin dances and swirls into a frenzy. And just when you thought it was all over, he picks up again and doesn't let up till the end.

 

Great stuff, CDGuy. The only band I can think of that reminds of this would be Carpathia Project (another fine violin-based band, btw).

Years back then.. I watched him and his band live. He is an amzing violin player. Personally, I can compare him with Jean-Luc Ponty of Mahavishnu Orchestra.

I still have his old Lp vinyl in my basement somewhere though. Unfortunately his CDs are very rare to find.  :(

I guess that's what amazon is for. The amount of stuff i've found on there is really huge. Really, there is no comparison to a record shop - infinately better.

Here's a composite of some of the solo on the second CD of this album, just for a taste. This isn't even all of it. This is only about a quarter of the stuff he does in the solo. And this is a whole ten minutes...

I saw him do a version of this when he played at Pizza Express. The seashore effects are done by rubbing the bow on bridge, with a pitch shifter. It sounds awesome. He was using a digital delay for a lot of the harmony and stuff. What he goes on to do in this solo is truely awesome, but i wont spoil it for you.

He played briefly with Magma, and can be heard on Live - Hhai, where he plays an incandescent solo on Kohntarkosz.

4 albums and a boot I have, find DL playing straight jazz or jazz rock. The boot is worth seeking: Cobham/Sancious/Lockwood/Holdsworth/Bruce at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1983.

Also "Mekhanik Zhain" from the same record, where he has a very long solo at the beginning.

Didier Lockwood can also be heard on Clearlight's "Vision" and "Le Conte du Singe Fou" albums and on Gong's "Downwind" and, if I remember right, "Time is the Key" too.
