I just bought Grave new world and Hero and Heroine, and I love these albums to death, I fell in love with both of them instantly, I just love the warm feel the albums have and the catchyness of the tunes (which I usual don't find very attractive), I'd say that Strawbs is catchy in the same way as Camel and Gentle Giant, pretty easily memorable songs with an amazing singer.

Well, onto my question, Is there any other albums from Strawbs discography that I must buy or just any other band that sounds much like them that I should check out?

I'd suggest "From the Witchwood", which features a young Rick Wakeman on keyboards. This is the link between their folk roots and their rock period. "Ghosts", the follow up to "H&H" is also excellent. "Bursting at the seams" was their biggest seller as it has 2 big hit singles on it, but don't let that put you off, it has some great songs too.

I'll ditto Easy Livin and add Deep Cuts. It was still loyal to the original Strawbs pastoral roots but at the same time was pivotal and marked a deviation. It's Cousins al the way and it is one of his favourite Strawbs albums.

Ghosts is very good. There is one titled "The Prince and the Princess". It's a live studio recording with audience dubbed in. For a radio broadcast obviously. It's the true period of "Hero & Heroine. There are a few flaws but it's a very good show. During the audience response there is the sound of a young kid or teenage girl screaming Strawbs! It's humourus or annoying. It represents the sound of the band during the "Hero & Heroine" tour. Synphonic Music might have a copy.

I love that Strawbs
 
You should definitely pick up:
- From the Witchwood - features Rick Wakeman and the amazing "Hangman and the Papist"
- Ghosts - brilliant title track and the rest of the album doesn't disappoint, either
- Bursting at the Seams - "Lay Down" is a classic
- Dragonfly - a transition album from their earlier, more pure folk, style
 
Also check out these album, when you get a chance:
- Strawbs - closer to traditional folk with glimmers of what was to come
- The Broken Hearted Bride - a recent release with a more modern sound but Dave Cousins voice is still one of the best out there
- A Taste of Strawbs - a brilliantly assembled box set featuring classics and deep cuts spanning the long history of the band

i absolutely love Strawbs Grave New World, but havent heard Ghosts yet. It sounds awesome and youtubing some clips jst to get a feel for the album. Amazing title track.
 
Weird Strawbs song is Part of the Union, very commercial in comparison to other tracks

I sampled a best of Strawbs cd, and it did not do anything for me. My next involvement was not an album directly but a dvd of a concert in Japan in 75. It is totally awesome from start to finish, and has sold me on the band.
          One of my favorite groups that is totally unknown and only had one album to their credit and have been compared to the Strawbs is Strange Days and their album 9 Parts To The Wind. At first, i did not see a connection,but after this dvd, i do. And the Strange Days album is from 75 as well.

Yeah, but the long song about the lady in the lake is AWESOME.  I think that makes up for the flaws in the rest of the album.

I love

Strawbs (first one)
Witchwood (such a great collection of songs)
Antiques & Curios (live album of mostly new music - great Martin Luther King suite!   Wakeman is good)
Bursting At The Seams (commercial and great at the same time)

I don't mind Ghosts, but that is the last great album, IMHO by strawbs

Dave Cousins first solo album 6 Weeks Last Summer (or whatever its really called) is great

Hudson-Ford first three albums are great as well.  And in some ways more progressive than Strawbs would ever get.

The Strawbs are wonderful I agree - Benedictus, Autumn, Lay down, Down by the Sea, Hangman and the Papist, Hero and Heroine, etc.......

Hero and Heroine - great album
Antiques and Curios - Wakeman is great on this album
Bursting at the seams - worth buying for sure also.

Dragonfly and the debut are more in the folk vain. However the debut differs from Dragonfly in the sense that it contains a style of  prog/folk writing that could be slightly compared to The Moody Blues or B.J.H. Dragonfly is definitely more to the mellow side. A Bizzare Collection Of Antiques and Curios represents a true folk approach and many of the songs performed live were never recorded in the studio.

I've listened friday night The Strawbs in their acoustic set (Dave Cousins +  Dave Lambert + Chas Chonk) in a small village in the Italian's Alps near Bergamo. Under the stars with a crown of mountains and forests.
They were the special guests of the Summer's festival of the Valley.
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC !!!
I've still shivers on my back.

I love this group !!!

Ghosts and Grave new world are my favourite.
confusion...will be my epitaph.

Hopefully this isn't taken as self-promotion, but I have recently posted reviews for almost all of the Strawbs studio albums and would welcome your taking a look at them.  Even if you don't agree with the ratings this should give you some good historical context for the albums and then you can decide for yourself.  Smile
