I just read that on modern drummer:

Joe Morello, the celebrated drummer with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, most famous for his smart, sophisticated solo on the odd-time hit “Take Five,” passed away on Saturday, March 12, at the age of eighty-two. According to longtime friend and student John Riley, Morello had been having heart trouble recently. We’ll be updating this story as we hear further details of memorials planned for the master drummer and teacher. In the meantime, read an exclusive 2006 MD Online story by Riley here: www.moderndrummer.com/updatefull. We’ve also posted this piece drawn from Joe’s classic tutorial Rudimental Jazz, recently reissued by Modern Drummer Publications: www.moderndrummer.com/updatefull. And be sure to read Steve Fidyk’s Jazz Drummer’s Workshop article on Rudimental Jazz in the May 2011 issue of Modern Drummer magazine, and see a related article here: www.moderndrummer.com/updatefull.

Modern Drummer will be publishing a tribute to Joe in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

Joe, thank you for all the years of great music. it was an honor to listen to your talent.

That sucks. I'm not familiar with much of his work, but everything I've heard has been very very good.

I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive

He wasn't fast or dynamic like Buddy, but he was one of the most innovative drummers in jazz history. His time signatures would just leave me in awe. You look at his work on sheet music, and you just shake your head thinking "How the hell do you play this?!"

Back in 1967 when I was just starting to learn drums, I had the pleasure of meeting him at one of his drum clinics. He was simply amazing, the way he would use his foot pedal, you would think he was playing double bass.

RIP Joe, you did great

He is playing on track 14;
