Il Maniscalco Maldestro is an Italian band who was once evaluated here in PA for inclusion. They once offered their two albums as free downloads and I grabbed them. I also got in touch with the band for an interview (long time ago).

Dado answered my questions.

#################################################

When, where and by whom was Il Maniscalco Maldestro started ? Did you play in any other bands before Il Maniscalco Maldestro ? Why did you choose that name ?

The band was born in Volterra (near Pisa, Tuscany) in the year 2000, from an idea of Antonio "Tonjo" Bartalozzi, our singer...Before everyone of us had other projects, from different musical worlds, but the same will to be "musicians for life".
The name is a sort of ironic-messed up tongue twister, wich wants to recall the ancient italian crafts! "Maniscalco" means "Farrier", while "maldestro" means "awkward"...You know, Antonio likes to be complicated....ahahahaha!!!

Is Il Maniscalco Maldestro a band or a project ? What is the full ethos of Il Maniscalco Maldestro ?

Il maniscalco maldestro is a band and a project too.
But that's not all.
This band is our second family,  the "place" where you can hide and find true friends...I thinks this is our major strenght.
We are friends before being colleagues...And this is clear to everyone.
Come to our gigs, and you'll see a stage filled up with friends making some f**king, noisy rock'n'roll...Happy to be there, most of all!!!  :)

How was the music scene in your area when you started ?

A tragedy!!!! ahahahahahaha!!!! I am not joking...
Italy of  the years 2000 isn't a good place to promote something different from the most popular pop music.

Over to your albums. Your debut album was Il maniscalco maldestro from 2005. Please tell us more about this album.

My favourite!
"il maniscalco maldestro" is the result of two previous demos and a very interesting musical journey of Antonio...I guess he didn't want to be collocated into a particular scene,  that's why in this album you can find everything, from jazz to metal...By the way, this is still our musical attitude, and will always be.
...To me, this is the real sense of "progressive music"...Progressive is freedom!

Your second and so far last album is Panna, polvere e vertigine from 2009. Please tell us more about this album.

The second album had a different birth. While "il maniscalco maldestro" was written entirely by Antonio, for this album (with me in the band since a few month) we worked together in the rehearsal, creating riffs and jamming a loooooooooooot.

For those of us unknown with your music; how would you describe you music and which bands would you compare yourself with ?

I guess our proposal is a strange meltin' pot  between everything you can find in music. We don't do plans. Maybe tomorrow  we'll come out with a disco album! ahahahah!!! Who knows?
Each one of us has totally different tastes in music...I do really love bands like Porcupine Tree, Pain Of Salvation, Transatlantic, Opeth...Antonio comes from jazz and funky music, Stefano (our drummer) is grown listening to bands like AC/DC, U2, Queen......And so it goes!
I think our strenght is the ability to merge these influences together to find our own sound!

If I am not mistaken, both albums are free downloads. Why did you decide to offer your works for free and what is the pros and cons of that choice ?

Not anymore, because of contractual plans....
We made this decision some years ago to give our albums the possibility to be heard everywhere from everyone....And it did really work. This is the "pro".
The "con" is that we still have to beg for having a pasta dish... ahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

What is your plans for this year and beyond ?

We are working hard to our third album, and i am really, really, really proud of what's coming out...When the record will be ready, i guess we will start playing all over italy, and who knows, maybe all over Europe! I hope!

To wrap up this interview, is there anything you want to add to this interview ?

Yes, i would like to thank you for this interview, and everyone who is reading these words!
Come to visit us to our website  www.ilmaniscalcomaldestro.com !!!!

"Awkward" greetings!!!
