Hey prog lovers I believe this is my first post - and with it comes a challenge!

Me and a couple of friends are looking for some Mexican sounding prog.  Now I've been listening to a few bands like Praxis, Elfonia, La Pura Realidad and while there are progressive elements there is not enough mariachi (see youtube video) www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oEL7wLrUPI

Can anyone point me in the direction of mariachi fuelled progressive rock?  If not who wants to start a band?!

The closest you'll get is the Suite Mexicana EP by Iconoclasta and even then its not exactly ranch music. More like a great fusion of indigenous, Spanish and 80s prog rock.

Dang ... what dope or drink are they on? ... I can imagine that, but I end up laughing so hard ... I'm not sure it is good for me to think that mariachi can not have any progressive musicians, specially when it is a traditional style of music ... but I am not seeing a lot of folks playing a synth on bar bands showing off their mariachi talent on the keys!

I think I need some bella donna ... or some really good beer from Puerto Vallerta ... Carlitos ... here I come!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Cast and Cabezas de Cera are a couple of really good Mexican prog bands, but I don't think that either use mariachis. LOL

I just got "Originallis", from Cast, and it's really wonderful... though there's no Mariachi influence at all. I expect to get some more Cast albums, as well as albums from Iconoclasta.

I don't really like Mariachi music, but I guess that if some prog influenced Mariachi were created it might just as well work nicely. They wouldn't even need to add keyboards, just making a more interesting use of violin and trumpets may do the trick... though some electric guitar and drums may be nice. And of course, such a band would need a terrific singer (good Mariachi should have a really good singer).

I really like Codice but there is no "Ay ay ay" anywhere!
Caramba!
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Wow that's a big list!  There should be some kind of sombrero icon next to the Mariachi ones ;)
@martinprog77 I found the video very entertaining and it's nearly prog; art mariachi :P maybe with some delay and organs it would work hahaha

I'm still looking for 'that sound' by the way, a couple of friends are looking too so will be sure to post if I find it...

Hello! I want to recommend you this prog rock band from Leon, Mexico called Nimb, the have released their first ep called Corvus Corax. You can find a mix between progressive rock, progressive metal and post-rock. I hope you enjoy it!

that's a helluva bump man... but a great topic so I'll call off the forum attack dogs.

for me...  0.720 Aleacion...  discovered them completely by mistake.  Listened to them by accident while supposedly evaluating a sympho band during one of Ivan's symphonic death marches back in the good old days of the site.  (before best pals Ivan and I split over me winning Raff's affections thus indirectly leading to years of guerrilla war and character assassination we waged on each other.. and that was prior to the mammoth RPI clash of wills, deviousness, and just pure force of wills that entertained all but the poor admins  hahaha).

Anyhow.. I told myself WTF is this. This isn't symphonic.. it is f**king GREAT.   Added the band.. and still today they are my favorite from Mexico.

Iconoclasta are awesome. Their first few albums are (still) their best, but their last one, Movilidad (2013) is really good. It's probably their best one since the mid-90s.
