Maybe it's just me, but I wasn't distracted by the drumming at all. John Mayhew clearly wasn't the right drummer for Genesis and it was fortuitous that Phil Collins happened to be around at that time, but I still think that Trespass is a superior album to Nursery Cryme. To draw a comparison to Marillion, Ian Mosley IMO is a much better drummer than Mick Pointer, but Script For A Jester's Tear is a much better album than Fugazi. |
I said I still love, didn't I? I also voted for it.

That's a good way to put it, but mine is Animals, with Trespass as a later comer.

so my vote of course goes to "Trespass", though it suffers from bad drumming, in my opinion. Genesis knew why they were searching for a drummer and were lucky to find Phil Collins for the next album

If you're basing your opinion on the rising popularity of punk and new wave in the late 70's and falling popularity of Prog Rock, you're chosen the wrong band to criticize, because Pink Floyd were one of the few Prog Rock bands to make a successful transition into the 80's, with sales of The Wall album outstripping sales of most punk and new wave bands combined. Until the arrival of U2 many punk and new wave bands didn't know which end of the guitar to play, so give me the bunch of boring old farts any day of the week.

I am basing my opinion on the album "Animals" alone. I mention punk and new wave because of their energy only and nothing else; compared to that "Animals" is "behäbig" indeed. Sales have never interested me; if anything they are an indicator of mediocrity. There are exceptions to that; even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while, but as a rule of thumbs it works pretty well.

I think Mayhew did a fine job drumming on Trespass. The album is what it is. and I love it. So do 27 others apparently. Cudos to those 27!

Which is the better album?

Seems that you are always confronting one of the best albums of Pink Floyd with not one of the best of Genesis..... (my affirmation is supported in the Progarchives ranking). By this way always Pink Floyd will win the poll....

Both PF albums here are in the PA top ten, so the poll result is no surprise. But to my tastes these are probably my two favorite Genesis-albums up against two of my least favorite Pink Floyds. |
I was thinking the same thing when it comes to comparing albums, and for 1969 Ummagumma vs. From Genesis to Revelation would be interesting. Pink Floyd's would trounce it, I think.
I prefer Pink Floyd up to Meddle over later Floyd (Atom Heart Mother being my fave thanks to Ron Geesin's excellent work). I used to really love Animals, however. Trespass is one of my favourite Genesis albums -- in fact it's the one I enjoy most after The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
I'm still choosing Animals as it has been the more important album to me over the years, and I do still enjoy it considerably. I think it's a very fine album, and love lyrics off it.

I must say, I play a side game with my brothers. I Chose Dogs as best lyrics. But how can you escape Gabriel "Hang them high let the blood flow down, in this ugly world, it is time to destroy all this evil now!." I could ramble on but. |
Good lyrics, but the lyrics on Animals resonate more with me -- I find messages more poignant, wry, and meaningful. I'll take the knife part in Dogs "You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to, so that when they turn their backs on you, you'll get the chance to put the knife in" over poetry in The Knife. Incidentally, i'm not someone who commonly pays much attention to lyrics, as I tend to prefer instrumental music to songs. And I like Yeats, Dylan Thomas, and Blake, but I'm not much of a poetry guy.

Animals. I don't particularly care for Trespass, and it's certainly overrated here on PA.

Trespass has some classic moments and helps establish what would become the sound for Genesis over the next several albums, but lacks a little bit of polish which was perfected with Selling England by the Pound. Every minute of Animals holds your attention and I will give a slight nod to that album.
