The Truth's Album of the Week Blog

Many prog fans shrink away at the sound of lo-fi with very little production but Guided By Voices is a band who can have very little production but sound oh-so sophisticated while doing it. I'm a member of the GBV cult and while they have very little exposure here, I feel that many prog fans will enjoy them.

In order for this to happen, here's a free live release they put out called Last of the No-Hit Wonders, it's a great, raw live piece that is a good example of how sophisticatedly unsophisticated they are.



Basically what's here is all of their hits and then some served in a lo-fi concert environment. It's by no means the great Bee Thousand but it's certainly a cheap introduction.

Many artists have a hard time being prolific as well as great, this is certainly not the case with 6LA8 who just released their fourth album in just this year, a collaboration with a past member Rakas.

This free little gem is a Class-A effort from a band I haven't been following too long but have always been pretty good. This album is much more than pretty good, it's brilliant. A light and soft folk with darker overtones surrounding it to create a truly lush album. Every song on One Frame Per Second is heartfelt and is an overall classy record.

It really struck me as kind of dense even though it's just a sort of indie folk.

I'm glad you tried it out, it definitely gets better on second listen, hopefully you'll find the lyrics an integral part. 

^ Yeah, it is kind of reminiscent of theatrical Decemberists, I'm glad you're giving it this much of a chance, Scott. 

So this week I don't really have an album in particular, more of an entire bandcamp page but the one I like the most is probably this one:





Vestiges of an Inherent Melancholy by Celer is definitely an album worth checking out. Glacial would probably be the best word to describe it. Beautiful, beautiful drone music. And they have a whole bunch of it for a pretty good price on their bandcamp page. Everything this duo does is ambient at it's best and definitely worth checking out. The album I mentioned is one of their best but also worth noting but not available on their bandcamp is Engaged Touches which is one of my favorite dronebient albums ever.
