Band from Belgum. Good neo prog. See http://www.fishonfriday.be which also includes tonnes of music samples (strangely enough listed under "music"........ hmmm......... weird !!)

I think they should be considered.

They are similar to Swiss band Irrwisch - more AOR than true prog, but still highly enjoyable to listen to, and  worth including on the site somewhere, I think. They are no worse than Asia, who are included as "Prog Related", so maybe Both Fish On Friday and Irrwisch could go in the same category...?

Their own website labels them as ''pop-prog'' which is about right. Don't hear any great similarity to Asia ,they are more like this band when they went through a poppy phase in the late eighties:

Richardh - thanks for the link to the wonderful IQ video!! I thought I had pretty well everything this great band ever did...but I never saw THIS before!!  When I said Fish On Friday were no worse than Asia, I didn't mean to imply that they SOUNDED like them - they most definitely don't, as you correctly point out. What I meant was they are no worse in terms of their perceived lack of prog credentials than Asia, who despite this aspect of their music, are included on Progarchives (& deservedly so), simply because they made great music which had hints of proggy leanings in places. Fish On Friday (and also Irrwisch) certainly meet this criterion, so should be considered worthy of inclusion too.
 
IQ's "Drive On" may not have been strictly prog (though the instumental section at around the 3 minute mark certainly comes close!), but what an uplifting tune and splendid video! These guys sure got a sense of humour! Paul Menel has indeed made a comeback just recently, and (temporarily at least) pinched IQ's bass player too, just to rub salt in the wounds...So many of these great neo prog bands seem to delight (?) in sharing their musicians - it seems to be a never ending merry go round! Apart from their keyboard player, IQ are now almost back to where they started in terms of their line-up!

yep I love that video as well. I've seen IQ live several times and the video is well in keeping with their collective sense of humour that for sureBig smile
Good to see Paul Menel back. Very talented song writer as both Nomzamo and Are You Sitting Comfortably show.
I agree with your comments about Asia and would support the inclusion of Fish on Friday on that basis. Sorry I didn't read more carefully.Embarrassed

If you've not seen them yet, there's a fair few good quality vids been posted of Paul Menel's new band at a couple of recent gigs.

Sorry I'm deviating a bit from the topic here, but I guess we'll also have to get Paul Menel added to the site in the not too distant future...
One thing I found strange about Asia was that with the amount of genuine prog pedigree contained within (initially Howe, Wetton, Palmer...) you would have expected them to be much more than just an AOR band (albeit a damn good one!) I guess we have to blame Geoff Downes - who was a constant factor throughout almost the entire band's history, and had a hand in writing most of the songs.

Asia - Geoff Downes was never really a died in the wool 'proggy' To be fair though the others were looking for something different as well. John Wetton who was very down on his time in UK and make it very clear he didn't like Eddie Jobson turning his songs into prog epics. To some extent Carl Palmer was also complicit. Coming out of ELP he simplified his style and added an extra bass drum and seemingly only wanted to drum in 4/4 time. Steve Howe never changed that much and after the 'its me or him' episode which resulted in John Wetton leaving (allbeit very briefly) not surprisingly he was the first casualty of the determination of the band (and management) to stick with a commercial approach. Phoenix was a very nice comeback album though. Highly recommended that if you don't already have it.

Yes, Phoenix is a fine album, and John Wetton one of the all-time greats in terms of his lifetime contribution to music (prog or otherwise). I found all Asia's material quite "listenable" whatever the line-up was, but for me the very best  versions of the old classics are to be found on John's live albums with his 2003 band consisting of Martin Orford, John Mitchell, & Steve Christey. Check out the CD "Agenda (Live In Poland)", or either of the DVDs "Amorata" or "Live In The Underworld" for an absolute treat - particularly the latter!) The versions on here of some of the old King Crimson and UK songs are far superior to the originals, imho!!

Very interesting about John Wetton.I would like to check those DVD's out 
I do have a smoking version of In The Dead Of Night from Progfest 97. The guitar and drums are on another planet. This particular line up included Billy Liesegang (guitar) and Thomas Lang (drums) as well as Orford on keyboards. There is also a 2 cd set 'Live In Argentina' although the performances are not quite as hot as Progfest 97.

Yes, richardh - I have the Progfest '97 DVD too, and it IS a fine version of "In The Dead Of Night" that they turn in. Believe me though, the performances of this song on the two DVDs I mention above are right up there with it, & the two versions of "Starless" are even better!! John Mitchell is one mighty fine guitarist - his playing on the "Live In The Underworld" DVD is simply superb...especially considering he was suffering big-time with the flu that night!! it looks like we've gone way off the subject of "Fish On Friday" here, but hey - this is seriously classy prog were talking now!!
