Haven't seen any mention of this elsewhere on PA, but it looks like Mike Mangini is the new drummer for Dream Theater, its only a rumour but seems like it could very well be true?

It's official that Mike Mangini is the new Dream Theater drummer.

Thoughts, opinions? How will his style impact on their sound? What do you think of the choice over Minnemann?

It sounds like a good fit based on the videos.  He seems to be a fit personality wise as well.

Supposedly they are going to include the documentary with bonus footage with their upcoming album.

Yes. I wrote the same thing before one minute in MMA. That he fits with the band.

Mangini is a cool person, very like the personality of the DT guys, talent is beyond discussion as well and right now I'm hearing him playing in James Labrie solo album and it sounds just great... I think it was a fun documentary and all of them did a great job.

Particulary, Lang and Donati did some really cool stuff, but well, Mangini seems like the right piece of the puzzle. I'm really excited about the new album...

I personally liked Lang the most from the videos. Marco was excellent too, but he doesn't fit the "serious" tone of Dream Theater very much.

Mike Mangini, welll, he's a very god fit for Dream Theater. It seemed a bit obvious on the outset. He seems very similar in style and attitude to Portnoy. I have some reservations about that. But it will work out.

I agree.

I think it is very much about fitting in terms of tone and style. When you're dealing with Marco, Mangini, Lang, Virgil, etc, you can't really be choosing for drumming ability as they are all just on a level of insane ability, but I guess they were looking for the full package and Mangini was the closest fit. The guys seemed to really respect his comments aswell.

I render an opinion when I hear the next album.

Not impressed with all the hoopla when this seemed like the choice for some time.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Gutted it wasn't Lars Ulrich. Cry

But seriously, Mangini is a great pick. Was kinda hoping for Minnemann coz he seemed like a really cool, friendly guy, and obviously a great drummer too. Also, Hannover (his home town) is about an half an hour away from where I currently live, so I would have moved there just to brag about living in the DT drummers hometown. Tongue

Very good choice. I still won't watch their stupid reality show. I'll hear the album when it's released. I'm glad they picked a good drummer.

And it is Mike Mangini. Virgil Donati was evidently part of the audition process as well, that would have been interesting. So what do you guys think?

I was tempted to use the 'yawn' emoticon tbh. I do like Dream Theater (well one or two albums incl Six Degrees and Awake) but find it difficult to stay interested in them now Portnoy has left the buidling.

I wish they picked a jazzier drummer.

That wasn't in the discussion at all.  They wanted somebody to continue their style, not reinvent it (which was their main complaints with Lang or Donati).

The bigger question is seeing what Mangini is able to contribute to the writing process... that's a question mark.  But personality-wise, it's like they got a relatively clean-shaven version of Portnoy.  (Prior to the documentary, I was concerned Mangini might be getting a bit long in the tooth, but he looked about fifteen years younger playing with the rest of DT.)  It also, likely, opens the door for Portnoy to return eventually, as the two are so similar stylistically (albeit Mangini having clearly faster hands).

Although Marco is by far my favourite of the auditionees, I feel that Mike Mangini is a better fit for the band. Both of them are an upgrade from Portnoy.

I liked Minnemann better with Paul Gilbert anyway.
