Gentle Giant is not for my tastes. Mastodon is growing on me.

Though Gentle Giant isn't my favourite band...they are miles ahead of what i have heard from Mastodon, no doubt.

I don't find my poll strange at all, or off for that matte, two HIGHLY ambitious groups of their time, writing tight consese music, that are both technical but not overly serious, top notch musicans but not offering their playfullness, concepts that are not to full of them selfs, reflective and intence but also catchy.
so I can actualy se some simialritys between GG and Mastodon, they are not obvious, but for a fan of both. it is some of the same apeal i see in both, that it is a unit that together sort of know what they are after, and some how achive it (even if they are not awere of it, i look at you GG) Derek is to hard on he's own bands merrits, your albums are better then you thing SIR

Both fine bands, but GG is more my bag than extreme metal.

Gentle Giant has multiple 5 star albums
I had never listened to Mastodon before this poll
listening to Crack the Skye right now via Youtube
like Opeth.... the music is good until the singer opens his mouth :)
an easy vote for GG here

Honestly, for me it's a tie. Two of my favorite bands right here.

I don't think they're close at all in terms of complex composition, but I have to go with both because I love both bands.

I like neither, but Gentle Giant is certainly the better of the two.

I know I'll be treading on some toes here, but I know GG much better than Mastodon, so I'm listening to Crack The Skye now (about the 4th time) and allI can say is that I could recognise GG anywhere, whereas what I'm hearing from Mastodon could be just about anyone from that particular genre. Not bad by a long shot, but not above or different from what a lot of other bands are doing. So it goes to GG for uniqueness alone.

If you are brave enough I will challange you to listen to all the four Mastodon studio albums, to see what is so spessial about Mastodon, all the albums are equaly strong. but also somthing completly different from eachother,, you never know what gone into their heads in the making prosess, many interesting songs, how they make songs and how they play songs is in such high level of profissancy that you will be baffeld

I've only got into GG recently (got the first five albums I think?), and while they've got moments of brilliance, on the whole they're far too inconsistent for my liking (that is, too overtly proggy, too much contant changing and not enough time spent letting things flow, hard to listen to). I still like them, they're obviously excellent musicians.
Mastodon on the other hand, I've only heard Crack the Skye. It's mostly too heavy for me, but The Czar is brilliant and I recognise the quality of the album.

Gentle Giant is one of my all time favourites, and Mastodon is just one of many good bands for me, so Gentle Giant for me.
