Only have a few albums of boths, and I know they are not always comparable, except for making long instrumental tunes. Which artist does the PA audience prefer?

I can't vote. As you say they are not directly comparable and I like them both. I think TD can be compared with Vangelis

Mike Oldfield. One of my favourite composers. Tangerine Dream i like too but MO gets the vote.

Can't get into TD (yet?) but I love Oldfield's early albums, plus some of his later stuff, so it's the Mike - man.

Oldfield. Much more lively music from him. Especially his '70s records.

I would agree if it's the Froese,Franke and Baumann lineup of TD.

Mike Oldfield.

TD completely loses me after the mid-80s.  Oldfield has released some sub-par material as well, but he did return to form in more recent releases.  Also, the very earliest TD releases either bore or annoy me, whereas the earliest Oldfield is stellar.

Tangerine Dream without a doubt. There's only one Mike Oldfield album I find listenable throughout.
