I investigated this some time ago because of a similar thread. My first thought was that 1972 would be the winner, but '71 and '73 ended up just a bit higher. Surprisingly, the clear winner appeared to be 1975.

I am pretty sure he was joking.

I picked 1972, but 1971 and 1973 are just as great. I chose 1972 because it seemed like a milestone year for rock all the way around: in addition to the albums you listed, there was Tull's Living in the Past, The Stone's Exile on Main Street, Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Neil Young's Harvest, Deep Purple's Machine Head and Made in Japan, Allman Brother's Eat a Peach, T. Rex The Slider, Todd Rungren's Something, Anything, Sabbath's Vol. 4, ELP's Trilogy, Humble Pie's Smokin', Alice Cooper's School's Out -- Just an unbelievable year.

Of course, the same could be said for 71 and 73, I guess.

first everything was so clear, 1972. but then I gave this poll a second thought and decided to pick year 1973. it was a year of two masterpieces and my big favourites - Tales From Topographic Oceans ans A Passion Play.

As crimhead nicely put it: 1973. What a great year that was.

its between 72 and 73. But I think 73 wins because it has Mahavishnu's Birds of Fire

A tie between 72 and 74 for me. Leaning toward 74 if I could vote, though

For me, 1971 was the peak of it all, though 1969 was the opening salvo.

Looks like '72 is taking it and I can't help but agree.  Maybe my all-time favorite record, Morgan's Nova Solis, came out that year.

1970, prog was young and vital and mystic and experimental and finding its sound. A incredibly good and intresting year.
