So impressed with the latest Spock's Beard album "X", which has never left my mp3 player. So which Spock's Beard period contains their best work? Neal Morse period or post Neal Morse period? The Light is one of my favourite albums of all time. However I never warmed to Beware Of Darkness, Kindness Of Strangers, or Day For Night. "V" and "Snow" were back to form to me. Of their post Neal Morse albums I really like Octane and the live album, Gluttons For Punishment.

I like all of Morse era, V being the best, Day for Night the worst but still good. After Neal left it took them a couple of albums to straighten up, but the s/t album and X are great. Still, no contest, Morse era.

Oh well. Should have made this poll a post Spock's Beard Neal Morse versus a post Neal Morse Spock's Beard! Still think that "X" is one of the best Spock's Beard albums that the band has ever recorded.

Nick's Beard are the underdogs here, and they get my vote for that reason.
When you consider that they're a band that lost their primary songwriter, and none of the other musicians were actually songwriters themselves (just talented session musicians), I think they've done a pretty good job of making and maintaining a name for themselves (abiet with the help of some outside songwriters). Also, Nick's voice makes me smile. He reminds me of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo.

Clearly, as a whole, the Neal Morse period is better, but "X" is a superb album and ranks with the best of the Morse period Beard.

Haven't heard "X" yet. But there's no way that the one album could surpass The Light, Beware of Darkness and V on its own. Octane has really grown on me though...

Neal's era for me as of today and after listening to the Beard without him, I'm still believing that "V" and "Snow" are the most remarkable albums released by the band.

Morse era. On the strength of The Light and V. X is great too, as many others said before.

Generally I like the Morse era.
V is fantastic.
But Snow was so mediocre that it seemed to indicate that Morse was spent.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

The Neal Morse era is by far superior to the post Neal era. Nick and the band have been generally bland at best until X.
X is a brilliant album and hopefully represents the Beard finding their own style after Neal's departure. But, across the board I can only say that the Neal Morse led Beard far outclasses the post-Neal version. It is no contest. Not sure what people are smoking in Slovenia, but it must be potent.
