Topic: Carlos Santana vs Neal Schon Posted: June 09 2011 at 16:41
both played in Santana, both are higly skilled and known for their tone on guitar, two legends of guitar and two of the most influential guitarists the last 30-40 years.
both diserve some clappies and atention , more Neal though whom seems to be not mentioned much but he is a killer guitar player, with a higlight on the letter KILLER.

that does not take away that Neal Schon started in Santana when he was 16, and is regarded as a master guitarist, and can shred like the best in the game (Steve Morse, Paul Gilbert, Van Halen), so in the guitar circus he is highly regarded as a great guitar player
Most of his musical career has been in Journey. So thats what i look into the most. Not saying hes a terrible player due to the band hes in not being a real uhm, "rocking" band, i just think its obvious that Santana is far better.

Im not really making this poll to give Neal Schon PR, but I think he is a guitar player that needs more attention becouse he is really good, and not much "worse" then Carlos

Neal Schon spent the majority of his career with Journey. Whether he can shred or not is inconsequential, he still had a part in some of the most mind-numbingly cliche songs ever written.
Santana.

Schon is a fabulous guitar player, but hearing that on Journey's AOR hits can be difficult. Chuck that stuff, and listen to the first three Journey albums. If all you have heard is the Steve Perry material, you will be in for a big surprise. As outstanding as Schon is, my vote still has to go to Carlos Santana, a truly unique and visionary artist, and yes, a killer guitar player.

also im probably ( i am ) a nooooobe, but i have never heard a guitar RIFF played by mr Santana, he only plays solos, which to me is as much expressive as a lump of butter it is good on one slice of bread but sickening with much of it, with Schon you get power riffs, solos and crunsy sounds and sh*t., but with what i have heard with Carlos you get solos, one string solos, not a single chord or riff, or groove only lead solos, and like I said it is like eating a package of butter without any thing to subestedice the butter... with some ham or salami or egg

I agree, most of Santana's guitar work is done from solos, but they're good solos. Expressive, not too flashy and taseful.
I couldn't care less if Schon doesn't solo all day, his style is boring and predictable.

Santana, like Hendrix, Gilmour, Brian May, Jeff Beck, etc., has a signature sound. He is immediately identifiable. Very few guitarists have that innate ability. Neal Schon is not among them.

I bet most people voting here have never heard Neal's solo albums, which is why they act like all he f**king did was Journey.
Neal Schon's name is afixed to 14 Journey releases, including some of the most deplorably sappy music ever produced in the 80s. Just because he sh*t on himself, don't expect everyone else to wipe it up.
