I consider Crack the Skye to be one of my favorite albums, and I moderately enjoyed the progressive harshness of Blood Mountain and Leviathan. Supposedly, the next album will be faster with no epic tracks, which has me kind of worried. And they apparently wrote the album within a week or two, which isn't very comforting. I really hope it turns out well.

sometimes different writing methods is good, sometimes an album takes a year other times it takes a month and sometiems a weak. it depends on the mood and dayform of the band, and Mastodons dayform is different then most humans, they somehow pull of music from its sleave that would amaze even Houdini, I am sure it is a cohesive album tight and furyus,  and it will also to my knowledge and wikis be ther (5 out of 5  in theyr element concpet)

According to an interview on the DVD The Making of Crack the Skye, this album represents the Ethereal element, which is represented by the souls and spirits of all things, a theme closely related to the context of album. Leaving only the element of Air, after Remission, Leviathan , and Blood Mountain have respectively covered the elements (Fire, Water, and Earth).

I find the current title of this thread to be misleading.
Mastodon have not released a new album, nor are they releasing one any time soon.
The article only says --- "The band recently wrapped up tracking the brand new effort, which should be out before the end of the year."

I could never get into Mastodon until they added more melodic elements with CTS.  I hope this isn't a retreat from the prog-ness of CTS.

I also hope they don't abandon the impressive illustrated covers and typography of their previous releases either.

I'm going to say that they probably do both of that with this album.

Shedding the ambitious musical elements and going for a stripped down sound seems like a recipe for disaster. Didn't work for the Decemberists earlier this year, and cannot see it working well for Mastodon.

A bit goofy. Wonder why they didn't just choose to keep the consistency going with the other albums ...

Holy sh*t! I don't know if I should laugh or stare in awe.

Either way, this thread has made me want to get back into Mastodon. I got into them when their first album came out, but lost interest when I got into prog rock and moved away from most metal. I got Cracke The Sky a few months back, but I need to give it more listens, (only one listen so far...)

Dug Crack the Skye, but if they're going backwards I'll wait to read some reviews before picking up the new one.

The cover is ok. It looks like a Fisher Price toy monster. Not that there's anything unmetuhl about that.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.
