Topic: Serj Tankian solo material Posted: June 15 2011 at 11:14 |
I'be been a big fan of System Of A Down for some time now & am curious as to what Serj Tankian's solo material is like; he impresses me hugely as a vocalist/songwriter with SOAD, but I've seen some very mixed reviews of his solo material, so (objective) recommendations would be appreciated. Doesn't have to sound like SOAD, just well worth a listen. Cheers Jim

I prefer his first CD over his recent one. It doesn't sound much like SOAD, the main thing that reminds me Systems is Serj's voice. His vocal skills are really good, but you probably know this.
I dare to say that his second solo release is more ... Eclectic. They are both worth a listen, certainly.
Funny thing is that Scars on Broadway (Dolmayan, Malakian) sounds like SOAD, but somehow worse, without "power". It's still enjoyable though.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhh....
It's good for a few listens but wears off quickly. Individual songs I would recommend are: Left Of Center, Sky Is Over and Lie Lie Lie
all of which have videos.
his second solo album is better than the first, but is a 5/10 at best.
happy listenings!

Hmmm - looks like I should listen to some snippets first before I invest... I take it the live orchestral version of the 1st album is a bit (and I hate this word) meh...

I'd take Scars on Broadway over Serj. They have all the wacky energy that System had. The problem is that that's all they have. So the songs are all very short and simple. Still a lot of fun, but kind of offensive as well.

hmmm I would approach it with caution...
Although the vocals are good, the samples I have heard are somewhat lacking... well many things.
I think I will agree Mike's comment on short and simple

I think I may be in the minority that I never even came close to liking his vocals.

Yeah, his album "Elect the Dead" was lacking so much for me that I didnt even bother with his second album..
I do however really like the Serart project he did in 2003, with folk multi-instrumentalist Arto Tuncboyacryan but its much different to SOAD... they always said there'd be a follow up and I'd pick that up without hesitation... This has such a world music feel to it..
