80s Yes was more than fine with me, it's the 90s that were rather poor - Union and Open Your Eyes are unlistenable to me and The Ladder was rather uneven. Talk was their only good album in the 90s IMO.

hmmm. Here is the McBreakdown...
1970's.. Yes by lightyears over Rush
1980's... dead even. Early 80's Rush ruled.. then they went into the toilet. Yes was consistently good not as good as early 80's Rush.. but were far superior to late 80's Rush.
1990's and beyond. Rush by a hair.. only for Counterparts which was their last album of any note. They churn out albums that Rush fan loves.. but for the rest of us... yawn. Same with Yes in that regard.

I liked it... really liked it  Hell I love 70's Rush but still squashed by the shear quality, quantity, and impact of Yes's 70's output. I thought that Rush album Counterparts was the last 'classic' from either group thus gave them the nod for the 90's and beyond. fwiw of course

oh yeah... funny... as much as I LOVE that album. One I'd put on par with their greatest 70's classics for what it was. A Prog masterpiece for the 'new era'... I simply didn't figure it into the 'equation'.  Making the 80's edge to Yes.

wise decision..I lost them after Signals. However you might want to check out Counterparts. It was a killer album. Last 'classic' IMO by them.

Counterparts is probably my favourite Rush album of all time. Not a weak track on it, unlike most of the albums after it (and that includes the much-lauded Clockwork Angels, which in my opinion loses steam big time in its second half).
That said, I think 70's Yes smoke most other prog bands. A trio of albums such as The Yes Album, Fragile and Close to the Edge would be enough to put them on a pedestal. Rush - as much as I love them - never produced anything comparable (in terms of both quality and influence) in their whole career.

Another (personal) point of contrast: I have seen Rush only the once, on the Power Windows tour on the back of their early 80s output. It was one of the most boring concerts I have ever been to (along with Dire Straits) and a huge disappointment. By contrast, the last time I saw Yes was the Union tour, and that was thoroughly enjoyable (despite the disappointing album - which they hardly touched live...)

In terms of PROG ROCK Yes is easily better, because no Rush album can touch Yes album Close to the Edge when it comes to prog rock. In terms of general ROCK music Rush is better. So anyway my pick is Rush, because I like them more.
