I agreed. Gong Live Etc. blow my mind back then in 1977. Actually, I remember THE day when I get a mail with that amazing double LP album; I was 14 when I got it.

I remember the day I bought mine as well. (spoke about it before) I have a pretty sullen member of staff at Andys Records (Market store Cambridge) to thank as I wanted to buy some Gong but didn't know which one. He recommended Live ETC and I bought it after a long contemplation of how much money I had. Eventually forked out whatever it was and since then (probably not when it came out probably more like 1979 or 80.) I have loved it more than most. It is delicious and occasionally deliciously funky. Of course, when Steve Hillage left GonG he experimented further with FunK.

Help me I'm falling!

MATERIAL were well knowing funk band from NYC in early 80s http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=4667

Bill Laswell: basses
Michael Beinhorn: synthesizers
R. Bernard Fowler: lead vocals, background vocals
Nile Rodgers: guitar
Raymond Jones: Yamaha CP-70B electric piano
Daniel Ponce: bongos
Tony Thompson: drums

Quote "One Down marked a distinct shift in sound for Material, the avant-garde downtown pickup group organized around bassist Bill Laswell and keyboardist Michael Beinhorn. The edgy experimentalism that characterized earlier efforts like Temporary Music and Memory Serves is downplayed here in favor of funk and disco tunes delivered with a minimum of weirdness. Sure, it sounds dated but that doesn't make it less attractive. Laswell is a master of funk bass, and with guests like drummer Yogi Horton, guitarist Nile Rodgers and singers Nona Hendryx and Whitney Houston (just before she became a superstar on her own), he didn't really have much chance to go wrong. Highlights include"Take a Chance" and the strutting "I'm the One"; if you want something a little more challenging, check out Archie Shepp's squalling sax solo on the Houston cover of Robert Wyatt's "Memories." This is straight-ahead turn-of-the-80s funk at its old-fashioned best from the folks you'd have least suspected of harboring such sympathies."

If you want to get into funky prog you will have to venture into fusion terroitory.
Here's some stuff I can recommend:

Herbie Hancock - Thrust
Sly and The Family Stone - Fresh
Eddie Henderson - Sunburst
Weather Report - Black Market
Brecker Brothers -Heavy Metal Bebop
George Duke - Faces In Reflection
Larry Coryell & Alphonse Mouzon - Back Together Again
Lenny White - Adventures of The Astral Pirates
Harvey Mason - Funk in a Mason Jar
Return To Forever - Romantic Warrior
Rahmann - Rahmann
Pierre Moerlens Gong - Full Circle Live
Michal Urbaniak - Fusion III
Edition Speciale - Alliquante

Enjoy!

Many prog bass pkayers were influenced bumy Sly and the Family Stone Chris Squire is one, Motown is for many drummers a source of inspiration Phil Collins f.eks, And Greg Lake i think emulated soul singing techniques, so does John Wetton, Jack Bruce even Peter Gabriel also tries to do it.
