I recommend one band and one jazz artist. Elephant 9 (it's a norwegian fusion band but I think that they have funk elements) and Eddie Henderson (very funky).

I felt that Brand X were rather funky. If you consider them in the prog rock vain? Some of their pieces were slow paced with a Genesis feel and others were standard formulas for Jazz/Fusion. After hearing more than 8 of their cd's I have a difficult time lumping them into Jazz/Fusion and they cross into styles of prog rock writing as they do improvise so the term feels a little un-natural to me. For example with the instrumental/vocal short titled "Maybe I'll Lend You Mine After All" is more of an ambient prog scape that you might hear from Genesis in between tracks of the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album. But....maybe I'm off thread, but if you consider them prog....they are funky.
