For what it's worth, to a certain extent I agree with smartpatrol. I mean, for the first five minutes it's pretty much the greatest thing ever. But then they do the "workings of man" section, which sounds like it should be a grand finale (and when it's reprised later on, that's exactly what it is) but loses a lot of its power in the middle of the track, especially with the rushed buildup to it. Once that is done, the rest of the song is great again, but the placement of the "workings of man" section still bugs me. I guess I should attempt the ultimate travesty of editing it out.

A few songs come to my mind immediately:

  • A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers - Van der Graaf Generator
  • Theme 1 -   Van der Graaf Generator
  • Hole in my Shoe - Traffic
  • Illegal Alien - Genesis
  • See Emily Play - Pink Floyd

JOHN 15:18 :

Jesus said: -"if the world hates you, remember that it hated me first."

I don't see any evidence that Illegal Alien is overrated.Confused

And who does  Marillion copy?

Fish Marillion for me are like a simplified version of 70's symphonic prog. Without Fish i can't even tolerate listen to them.

I think their misplaced childhood album is hugely overrated. The whole album. Not so much the first 2 though, Fugazi being my favorite.

Another bunch of overrated are Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings by Rush.
I do rate moving pictures highly, so i dont feel that one is overrated.

I do like Genesis, but there is too much hype about their albums, as good as they are.

Actually I've heard far better 20 minute songs than Supper. But this is of course only my taste, and I can understand why people consider this a masterpiece, I don't.

People just seem to have an aversion to the word "overrated".

^ If so, what word should be there instead? Or ... . "Songs that get too much attention" ? "One of the relatively few songs one's knowledge is limited to" ? ... Wacko ... .

These de trop threads are strange critters. Many on PA appear a tad oversensitive to the polar extremes of 'overrated' and 'underrated' but ain't this dependent on whose opinions you hear?
if you move in metal circles, you will hear many fans raving about certain metal albums
if you move in jazz circles, you will hear many fans raving about certain jazz albums
if you move in indie rock circles, you will hear many fans raving about certain alt-rock albums

Does anyone move in Prog circles? (the only opinions I get to hear are those facilitated by the internet)

Reading some of the comments here just gives me a headache; for some people, being overrated means bands/albums people love but they don't. Confused
To me overrated is appreciation exaggerated, something over-hyped, a band/album that may deserve to be appreciated but not that much. Basically it's more than they deserve.
Plus, being famous does not mean being overrated either.

I disagree, for example I think Kiss are overrated (they don't deserve all the attention they get), do I like them? Yes, they have a ton of good songs.

you don't get to tell people that they like something more than they should - it's beyond arrogant.
we cant read minds, we cant tell who or if someone is jumping on a bandwagon.  you just have to accept that a lot of people like something more than you do.

I used to feel this way - I thought the Movie Titanic was 'overrated'
Part of my growth was I had to learn to get over myself and accept that people value and rate things according to how they feel and it's ok if they like the things I don't, and don't like the things I do ..
their tastes are appropriate for them .. as mine are for me.  it's really that simple

The terms "overrated/underrated" are all about subjectivity.
It's not about judging someone else's tastes. I never implied that. Like I said, something overrated is when appreciating something reaches exaggeration.
It becomes a hype, talk of the town to the point of annoyance almost.

Titanic is an overrated movie LOL, OMG,  back then it was like , if you hadn't seen it, you lived for nothing. LOL
