I've recently been far gone, lost in the borax brainpan of Don Van Vliet. White cloth bones, pollen caulks, Death/peace antiques - which record is the best batch yet?
 
Current vote goes to Doc at the Radar Station - love the weathering at the rim of his voice. Close runner-ups at the moment include Ice Cream for Crow (noisome squonk glory), Clear Spot (chaos harnessed and nurtured) and, completely unironically, Bluejeans and Moonbeams (not quite as alone and lost as previously indicated).
 
Paper station, purple spartan, one hollow porcelain curtain.
Certified Obscure Prog Fart.

Radio Obscura - obscure progressive rock podcast is obscure.

Safe as Milk was the first album I heard, and still my favorite. But to be honest, I still haven't heard Trout Mask Replica, but it's gonna be my next record purchase.

I suggest reading various reviews of various of his albums to perhaps help you glean some conception of what some people enjoy in his music. It should so without saying, but lamely saying it anyway, that different people have different tastes/ musical experiences, so what others appreciate is not necessarily something that you will appreciate.

Anyway, Trout Mask Replica and Safe as Milk are my favourites from the albums I know, but I haven't heard many of the albums, so I won't vote.

Beefie noob! I agree completely. Safe As Milk is an excellent starting point, since it's weird enough to compel without being alienating. I'll confess that Trout Mask Replica was a stumbling block for me - I had to move beyond it and come back later (Although, strangely enough, I fell in love with Decals almost immediately).

Not that many votes. Is Beefheart really such an exotic, acquired taste?

I'll give the first vote to Mirror Man. I love that record so much. I've heard all of these except Lick My Decals Off Baby, Unconditionally Guaranteed, and Bluejeans & Moonbeams.

Dunno, TMR was my first Beefy, and it hooked me well enough after a couple listens.  This was back in my early days of avant, so I wasn't even "highly experienced" with the type of music at that point. Tongue
