two bands that lasted just a decade, Gentle Giant managed to produce a little more albums then Roxy Music but both bands had quality albums and they managed to produce concise music as bands with high presission (with some low points), both bands are highly experimental and have a nice dose of both madness and subtlety. Both use styles from every musical and non-musical  sources like jazz, blues, Avant-garde, classical, minimalism atmospheres, folk, romantically and literature

they have both lucky to have great musicians, the ballance of well crefted songs and well written lyrics is equally strong in both bands,  both known for their artsy and spectacular live shows and both bands have a certain finger in today’s music scene both contemporary and progressive (almost every New Wave band have a huge depth or gratitude  to Roxy Music),

 Tongue
(I predict a GG dominance but RM is a tough dog as well)

A single side of one album of Gentle Giant is more relevant for the progressive genre then the whole Roxy Music discography for me.

Roxy Music represents too many contradictions for me to vote for them.  Although they had a unique sound and vision for their music, I think they got better as a band as they went more mainstream.  Their first album sounds very rough, almost as if they hadn't yet figured out how to really play their instruments.  Gentle Giant, on the other hand, started off strong, and only got better until the market dictated they simplify.  I find GGs blending of classical, jazz, and rock more interesting than Roxy's retro-future style.  Furthermore, using cello and recorders, etc. as well as the standard rock instruments is more charming to me than the abrasive sounds Roxy used. Despite how it may sound, I like Roxy a lot, it is just that I prefer GG.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

I am very proud to disagree, Big smile as RM introduced a whole new series of prog sensibilities (electronica RE The Bogus Man, incredible instrumental playing - Jobson, Manzanera, the incredible Paul Thompson and Andy Mackay) .

Most of all, RM brought class to prog as well as the rock world.
Now GG is something all together brilliant -I sa them twice live....and are quite deserving.
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

I voted for the band that had members named Eno, Manzanera, and Jobson.

Roxy Music was very innovative on the first album, a bit less on the second album, and after Brian Eno left the innovation seemed to leave as well.
GG seems to be innovative in a long row of albums, and even more innovative than RM. So I vote GG.

EDIT: I looked over the 'charming part'. No doubt RM is more charming than GG, still, GG remains my choice.

I agree with this for at least 80%. The only doubt I have is the fact that Brian Eno belonged to the early line-up.

I see one stregth to Roxy Music which Gentle Giant lacks, and that is Andy Mackeys Oboe, yes they played everyother instrument on the planet, and good at that, but to me Oboe makes the most perfect sound of any woowind instruments. that ellevates Roxy for my part, though Gentle Giant is my favourite band (or one of them), so is Roxy but Gentle Giant is much more stronger force of genius to me.

but Roxy Music is also a delight to listen to
